Three or four years ago a 13 month old little boy in my community died as a result of a Benadryl overdose. His day care provider had given it to him (without the parents consent) to encourage napping, and it killed him. The day care provider is now serving five years in prison for his death.

There had been some concern that he had an undetected heart problem and that was why the Benadryl killed him, but that turned out to be unfounded.

There is a reason the AAP tells us not to use some of these products on our little kids. With that said, I still do, on occasion, give my kids cold medicine when they are really miserable, so I'm not trying to preach about that. I just wanted it known that Benadryl CAN have dire consequences when used incorrectly.

If you kept reading, I did say that even then I thought it sounded funny. But that is what the Dr said when we called him about double dosing him. I am very careful now. But....honestly I'm sure that in most of these cases the people are dosing them incorrectly, maybe even on purpose. Which is sick and so very sad!! I'm sorry that happened to that little boy.

And I think we all have the wherewithal to know that ANY medication, even herbal ones, can have consequences if used IMPROPERLY. I mean, duh. (Not to be rude or anything.)

My pedi recommends humidifer, pillow to elevate the head and Motrin. No cold medicine for us. I hope they are feeling better now.

I have given my kiddos Delsym a few times. It has a dosage for children 2 and up and last 12 hours. I felt like I had no choice, and only do it when absoulutly need to. My DS was coughing so bad...like it was cough take a breath, cough take a breath, cough take a breath...over and over again. He was up until 3am unable to sleep from coughing. I actually sent DH to Walmart at 2 am to get him the Delsym. It helped him to sleep, with just a few occassional coughs. I only use it to help them sleep if it is bad enough to keep them up.

In those "not really bad" cold times we use Vicks baby rub, and the pedicare vapor plugins in their room.
