I can see how it would be irritating and once you notice it's not like you can un-notice. I would give her the benefit of the doubt though and if nothing else she might have to explain to an officer one day.

    Oh for crying out loud...
I have looked at a car for over 2 years living across from me with out of state expired tags. Like someone else said, I can't un-notice it now and the reason I knew about it in first place was because she told me. I didn't go snooping in her garage.
It was an honest question whether she could get insurance and whether the insurance would pay a claim on an unregistered car - because we've never heard of any insurance company not paying up due to some insignificant detail right?
I said in a previous post that I agree that there isn't anything really to be done about it.
There is a HUGE difference between being a little late on renewing and apparently just deciding that you're never going to.

eta: I know that $300 is not an insignificant amount of money but it been almost 3 years! I'm not talking about $300 dollars that came up unexpectedly and having to find a way to cover it with no notice.

Hey May? I wonder if she doesn't 'see' it anymore.

That happens to me a lot. I 'see' that I have a board hanging a little down on my house and put it on my todo list to handle. Then life happens and it gets lost from the list and I 'see' it again a couple months later and put it on my list, etc. That blasted board has needed to be re-nailed for two years now. And there's a little matter of me misplacing the water bill all the time because I have to remember to write out a check rather than do it online because they're not online like the electric company is.

Anyway, yes, she can get it insured and yes, the company will pay. (unless there is explicit language in the policy that excludes registration but I've never seen that on standard policies and if that is the case the other insurance company will pay and sue her and can you tell that I'm in the insurance industry by putting this in here? I should have written this in small font.)

Hey, some of you might be happy to know I got a ticket today for my lapsed registration. :) I almost starting laughing thinking about this thread. I did not know that you can renew at a Currency Exchange. That was news to me that the officer was more than happy to share. I went to get it done, (since Monday is my only day off and the DMV is closed) only to find out I need an emissions test first. ugh.

not something to be happy about. I recently had to get my car inspection sticker (it was also due for the emissions test) and it was a pain in the fanny. The garage closes at 5. The wait is usually at least 30 minutes. There is no place to sit while the car is being inspected, you can't stay in your car and it is not a kid friendly place.

    What was the fine?

I have never once gone in person in this state/county to renew my registration. We do ours by mail. Thankfully, in our county, we don't require emissions testing or car inspections (which imo are a complete rip off anyway).

Agreed. One does not necessarily have anything to do with the other.

This is pretty much me. However, as Jenny says below, once you have noticed, hard to unnotice. It might annoy me to think they were driving unregistered but then again not really my concern. If she gets the ticket, she'll have to pay the consequences.

    Very true.

Cristina, how ironic is that you should get a ticket for this now? Karma, huh? Sorry you had to get a ticket.
