I am 14 weeks pregnant with identical twins and just found out there is no membrane seperating the babies. SCARED! My head is spinning from all the high risk complications (twin to twin transfusion syndrome, cord entaglement, hospital at 24 weeks, delivery very early, etc...). They are going to do another ultrasound this Thursday to confirm. I would appreciate advice from anyone with a similar diagnosis. Thank you!

My sister went 41w with my neices and they are now 9 and doing great! She had no problems while she was pg and they were mo/mo as well! My twins were di/di and I ended up having ptl that was stopped @ 31w and was put on br @ 28w. Good Luck to you!

I am almost 10wks, same situation. I've had 2 u/s and they can't see a membrane. My u/s pic compared to others looks a lot different. I am also very SCARED! My OB, even has commented after 17wks, he will have to refer me to a specialist!!

Please try not to worry - your pregnancy can still have a wonderful outcome. While being pregnant with monoamniotic twins is scary and extremely high risk, you can still have 2 babies in the end. You will see a specialist and will eventually get placed in the hospital anywhere from 24 - 28 weeks. We chose 26 weeks. It was hard but well worth it.

Take heart! They may still find a membrane. We didn't see a membrane until 16 weeks at least. Then, we couldn't find it at 18 weeks, because it was shrink wrapped around our smaller twin - therefore TTTS! Yikes!

It's very hard to see! Mo/mo twins are pretty rare (not that it doesn't happen) but only 1% of ID twins are mo/mo. The odds are in your favor that they'll find one.

Also, we have mo/di twins and we have TTTS. It is scary and terrifying. If you ever get this diagnosis, let me know - I will point you in the direction of some wonderful help. The biggest thing I can tell you, knowing you have one placenta no matter what:
    1. drink lots of water
    2. take it easy if you can - don't push yourself - focus your energy on the babies
    3. boost your protein intake
    4. take your prenatal

I've been on bedrest with TTTS since 18 weeks. I have made it to 34 weeks (almost!). TTTS only happens in 10-15% of monochorionic pregnancies - so the odds are in your favor that everything will be fine!

Bottom line - make sure to get the care you need, but the odds are that they will find a membrane and that you won't have TTTS. If you do, there are lots of places for support and you will get through it! It's ok!

    Hugs,
    Jenny

I have mo/di twins and in the beginning they couldn't find a membrane. It was finally spotted at my 22 week u/s, it was super thin. Here is one of my u/s sound pics for one of my early u/s, as you can see it appears that there wasn't a membrane at all. Your doctors may still find one. I also found this website back when I though I was having mo/mo twins, it may be helpful for you. Good luck, I wish you a happy and healthy nine months.

I do know that when I had my first u/s at 15 weeks the tech was a little inexperienced and had a hard time finding the membrane. The following week when I went to the peri they were able to see it. Also I just want to say that my best friend Elissa and her ID twin sister Emily were mono/mono twins and were born at 35 weeks with no complications at all. Congratulations on your twins! :sign0016: to TS.

you know, someone on here whose twins had ttts wrote once that mo/mo twins actually rarely develop ttts. Not sure on how accurate that is...but Apparently one of the side benefits of being in the same sac with no membrane is that they do share amniotic fluid...so there is no risk of one twin getting a lot more fluid than the other. Obviously the placenta could still have issues... And clearly mo/mo twins have their own set of risks outside of ttts... but I thought at least that would be comforting to know that perhaps the risk of ttts is actually not as bad with mo/mo as it is with mo/di....

Just letting you know ultrasounds are not always 100% accurate. The whole time I was pregnant they told me I was mo/di after I had the babies they said 2 placentas & 2 membranes. You sure never could see it on the ultrasound though. Even my peri's all said that the membrane that seperated them was very thin. I guess everybody was wrong about the ultrasound or the reports on my placenta was wrong.. Try not to worry and everything will be perfect. Congrats on your twins.

Thank you so much, the doctors have already suggested going in the hospital at 24 weeks.

I can't thank everyone enough for the replies. It helps so much to hear from people who understand why I'm so scared. I just found this website last night and I am so grateful!

Well I know I feel a little better, thanks everyone. We are going back on the 16th so hopefully we can see LOTS of progress. After TTC for a few years, this has all been a little overwhelming to say the least! I'm really glad I found this sight, and can't wait to get to know everyone! It has already been so helpful!

Just wondering how things were going. I had mo-mo twins. I spent 5 weeks in the hospital, and delivered at 31 weeks. My girls developed TTTS at the very end. The docs were going to deliver at 32 weeks, but Abbie's heart rate dropped and stayed too low.

    Hope you are doing well!

Congrats! We too had a hard time finding a membrane (but eventually did) and developed ttts (stage two) from week 13 until week 36 when I delivered healthy girls who came home from the hospital with us. It is extremely scary but with great doctor supervision you too could have a positive outcome. I'm wishing you the best. Good luck!

Thanks for checking in with me. I am 29 weeks, have been inpatient since 26 weeks and feeling good. The plan is to deliver at 32 weeks. I had a growth scan yesterday and the babies are both 2 pounds 10 ounces. The monitoring sessions are a little trying, the babies move around so much that it's hard for the nurses to keep them on. If they don't get a good enough strip the doctors make them keep me on for 2 hours instead of 1 (I do this 3 times a day). I'll keep you posted.

    Thanks!

How long were the girls in the NICU?

I had mo/mo twins as well. I went inpatient at 24 weeks and stayed in the hospital until I delivered at 30w 5d due to twin B's decels. I'm so glad I was in the hospital being monitored! The girls were in the NICU for 26 days with no issues other than to gain weight and learn how to eat from a bottle. They were 3 pounds 10 ounces and 3 pounds 11 ounces, although the day before the ultasound estimated they were 4 pounds 3 ounces and 3 pounds 4 ounces. Good luck! Feel free to email me if you need advice or encouragement!! I know how those monitoring sessions can drag on for hours if your babies are active!
