Our situation was much like yours. We really wanted to keep them together, but wanted to make sure they both had an equal chance at developing academically and socially. We went ahead and kept them together in PreK, but asked the teacher to put them in separate groups. Then, at the end of the year, we asked the teacher what her opinions were on keeping them together and went from there on our decision for K. She told us that they would be fine together if that is what we wanted to do (which it was) so we kept them together. In K, we asked the teacher to once again place them in separate groups within the classroom and in worked out great. So, this year in first, we will do the same thing. For us, the together but in different groups has really worked out great. They both have developed well socially and academically so far, and until a teacher tells us that it is time to separate (or one girl decides to be in a different class) we don't plan on separating them just yet.

You worded it better than I - but this is what we did!

But I will say in 1st we ran into that they were in different groups but same class for many things, but when they split for ability reading/math groupings--- they were together, there was no other option since the group was made up of al threel 1st grade classes and they just happen to be similar in math/reading abilities (not writing). There was not another group to place them and not enough kids to split that group in two groups (it was 5-6 kids for reading and 8 for math) for small group instruction.

Just to give you a heads up that even if you try to split, they may end up together or if you want them together- they may end up split for parts of the day.
