I think it's sad that someone would think it's better to have IDs or fraternals. Heck, some people think having multiples is better than having one. We place importance on the craziest things.

Oddly enough, I experienced the opposite response from the multiples camp when I found out I was having IDs. I was quickly told by experienced multiples moms about all the problems IDs face as compared to frats as if my pregnancy was flawed, not as good as their's. And I couldn't help notice the "oh no" sort of reactions when a newly pregnant mom would post at the expecting forum that she was having IDs.

Every crow thinks his is the blackest is what my grandmother used to say!!

It's odd to think one type of twins would be more "prestigious" than other type. All kids are precious and having twins of any type is special! My daughters are identical and we have found it to be true that strangers are more excited when they notice that my daughters are identical. It may be related to the fact that the incidence of fraternal twins has increased over the years due to infertility treatments, hormones in milk/meat, and an increase in the number of women having children post age 35. Identical twins are more rare, perhaps making them seem more "cool." Furthermore, after a certain age, fraternal twins (especially if different genders) start to look like any pair of siblings while identical twins are recognizable at any age.

When I get asked if they are ID or frat .. its almost like they are accusing me .. "are they IDENTICAL ?" with a weird tone.
I even had a twin mom of ID's tell me "Oh I see you have REAL twins too !" I guess I never met anyone with "fake" twins ... maybe fraternal twins .. but they were certainly real children.
There was a time when I thought twins had to look alike to be twins .. only because you only ever saw ID's on tv or in magazines. It wasnt until I got older when I realized there were different types of twins.
Twins is twins .. thats all there is to it.

Butteryfly kisses, not mine are not ID. We had IVF and tx'ed two embies, and each took. I always think of them as being siblings who shared a womb. I try not to "unit think" them too much.

I love your thought on not "unit think"-ing them. . .

I have a neighbor with frat b/g twins who when she found out we we had ID boys said "oh, you guys have real twins." Her kids aren't real? It was kind of weird, I mean isn't the definition of twins 2 babies that grow in the uterus at the same time?
