Mine were born at 34 weeks, technically 6 weeks early. They spent 4 days in the NICU as feeders/growers and then came home. My pediatrician has never adjusted their age even for milestones.

Mine were born at 36w2d, so they were "early" but their pedi has never said anything about adjusted age or mentioned anything about milestones. (Yet.) :)

Mine were born at 37w4d, so they were considered to be 2w3d early. My doctor would not let me go past 39 weeks. Mine were a scheduled csection, which my doctor would not schedule prior to 37 weeks. She preferred to schedule around 38 weeks. Their age has not been adjusted and they were barely smaller than the average full term singleton.

They always go by 40 weeks due date - whether they are singletons or multiples. With that said, like pps said, most twins born after 37 weeks are considered term. Mine were born at approximately 34 weeks - 6 weeks early via emergency C-section - both over 5 lbs and didn't spend any NICU time at all and Pediatrician has never adjusted their age. So I guess it's different for everyone but, as long as you are as comfortable as you can be, hang in there for as long as possible. Good luck!

I agree with SC_Amy, 40 weeks is 40 weeks and that's the same for both twins and singletons. Anybody born before 37 weeks is a premature, but that doesn't mean that some babies do well if they're born at 35 or 36 weeks but it's still premature. Some twins do relatively well when born earlier compared to singletons but it's no guarantee nor a given. Medical research shows quite a difference between the various weeks (36-37 weeks vs 37-39 weeks) at the end.

My twins were born 12 days early, at 38w2d. So I consider them full term but still early.

Mine were 37w5d. There is actually an interesting article about babies born between 37w-38w in Today's Parent magazine. It talks about breastfeeding difficulties in these babes as they don't fully have the suck reflex but they aren't early enough to really need any other interventions. It was enlighting to me anyway. :)

Interesting! I wonder if that's why we had some problems. I wish I had known that or I wouldn't have asked my OB to induce when he did (37w6d); wonder if waiting another week would have helped with BFing. I just didn't want to go past 38w because of the increased risk of stillbirth, placenta aging, and the fact I couldn't walk after 34w!

My doctor would not let me go past 38 weeks, but I delivered at 31 weeks. I usually say they were born at 31 weeks versus 9 weeks early. But they came home after 5 and 6 weeks, so technically at 36 and 37 weeks.

Mine were born at 36 weeks exactly due to pre-eclampsia. They were in the NICU for several weeks and considered 4 weeks early. At first, our pediatrician considered them preemies and early. After a while, they gained a lot of weight and were on target for full term milestones. She doesn't adjust for them anymore (now 8 months).

Mine were 38 weeks exactly, so full term for twins but two weeks early for single babies. DD was 6lbs 11oz and DS was 6lbs 14oz. A whole lot of baby to carry around :) . My doctor was prepared to let me go to 40 weeks, but thankfully I went into labour and didn't have to. In saying that though, hang in there as long as you can. I know its hard, but its worth it.

My first ds was born at 36 wks, 4 wks early, at 5 lbs 13 oz. We never adjusted his age as he hit milestones on time.

My twins were born at 36 wks 2 days, also 4 wks early, but one was 7.2 lbs and the other 6.4 lbs, so I doubt we'll adjust anything with them either!

My boys were delivered by scheduled c-section due to being monoamniotic at 34 weeks. We adjusted their age by 6 weeks for the first 6-7 months or so. But, they were hitting all their milestones and were on the charts (barely) so the Ped stopped adjusting. They were considered 6 weeks early.

I see posters that say their twins are 4 weeks early or 6 weeks early. Are they talking early from a 40 week due date or a 38 week due date. My doc says they will be full term at 38 weeks and wont let me go any further, so would they then be considered two weeks early?

Mine were born at 36wd, but were IUGR babies and weighed under 4lbs each.

I had a scheduled C/S at 37.5 weeks, they did amnio the day before just to make sure the lungs we mature. I have always wondered about adjusted age but it has never been a factor in milestones thus far and my boys are 14 months now.

mine were born at 39 weeks - so just 1 week early. My blood pressure was going up so they wanted to get them out while everything was good with all of us.

They were 5'12 oz and 6'1oz - and thankfully had wonderful sucking reflexes - we're still breastfeeding.

My two came on the first due date my ob gave me. When we found out we were having twins, she moved it by 8 days. I still think the first due date she gave me was my actual date. So with that info, we went exactly 40 weeks! Riley was 7lbs 3oz and Jonathan was 7lbs 15oz. My ob tried to get me to have a c/s at a little over 37 weeks but I declined. Something didn't feel right doing that. I am glad I didn't! Both babies were perfectly healthy.

Mine were born a day after my due date, and they certainly weren't overdue--just the same size as their singleton siblings, in fact.

My twins were born @ 34wks & 3 days, my doc bases development on a 40 week term, but said twins normally deliver @ 38wks.
