I give corn on the cob to the girls. They hold it in their hands and go to town.

corn is hard to digest. super baby food book recommends not till 18 months for this reason. my kids have had corn in various forms since 1 yr. even pop corn if we are right there giving them a little piece of the puffed stuff.

Yes, we have been giving corn for a long time now. We used to let them knaw on the cobs.

We just started popcorn recently and I actually cut up the pieces of popcorn into smaller pieces.

My guys have been eating corn for as long as I can remember. They love it. Their fave is corn on the cob.

We've been giving corn since the babies started eating mostly table foods. Never on the cob, just canned or frozen. The only problem we've had is it doesn't always get fully digested, so be prepared for some "corny" poopie diapers if you decide to try it:)

    Same here.

My girls love corn and I don't remember ever being told that it was a choking hazard. The first person to give corn on the cob to my girls was my FIL and we have pictures of Kelly gnawing on corn on the cob. She must've been 9-10 months old at the time. They don't get all of the kernels off of the cob anyway they just kind of burst them open.

My dh makes a living fishing things out of children's airways - he says corn on the cob is fine for children with molars as long as they are seated with an adult. As for popcorn - never ever before 4, only while sitting at the table with adults & one piece handed out at a time. He doesn't think we will ever give it to our kids - it has no nutritional value & is a choking hazard even for older kids. For the poster who gives it to her toddlers - my sister's good friend lost her 17 month old son in June from choking on popcorn, in his highchair, while she gave it to him. He choked on the one piece she gave him, she couldn't dislodge it, he was effectively brain dead before the ER established an airway & he was removed from life support the next day. I think my girls will be wearing bras before they get popcorn!

My boys eat vorn all the time and have since we started them on table food.

They also get popcorn but I only give them the round part.. lilke the little balls? hard to explain.. but i give them once piece at a time.

Any food can be a choking hazard.. Just have to watch them.

I started giving my boys frozen corn around 18 months old. They love it. Grandma gave them their first corn on the cob after they were 2, and they loved it, especially with the little "handles" you put in them to help them hold it. I've never given them popcorn..one of my boys chokes on his own spit!

We never had a limit on corn.

As for popcorn, we are big movie fans, so while I can't remember exactly, my guess is they were probably eating it by 2.5.

Wow this thread really took off! Thanks for all the replies. I will be contacting their pedi and ask him though before I give them any. I guess back in 94-98 I must have had an out of date pedi for my sons.

My understanding was that the hard unpopped kernals in popcorn were the hazard. And that anything nickel-sized was a hazard. So, to me, corn on the cob, or cut off the cob was alright. I never gave popcorn until they were around 3 1/2. At 15 months we handed them a half-cob of corn and they gnawed on it for hours! It was so cute, and kept them so busy, we even started handing them cobs when we boarded planes because it would keep them busy and happy for the whole flight. They ate it so slowly that I didn't think it was a choking hazard.

I do. Not popcorn because of the hulls that get in my gums and I can't tell if they have something stuck in there or not and then they don't know how to floss to get it out. They seem to like the corn!
