    18. All the King's Horses -- Joss Stone
    19. Cadillac P*ssy -- Kid Rock feat. Hank Williams, Jr.
    20. Runaway Train -- Soul Asylum

Man, talk about a range of music there. Everything from Frank Sinatra to Korn!

Oh, and just because . . . For anyone who would like to listen: An American Elegy by Frank Ticheli as performed by BHS Symphonic Band 2007 Some background on the song, which the band played at the 2007 Tennessee Band Master's Assoc. Convention, the only high school band in the state invited to play:

"Eight years ago today, the world was stunned as several students opened fire on fellow students and faculty members inside Columbine High School in Colorado. "An American Elegy" was written as an expression of hope., composed in memory of those who lost their lives on that dreadful day, as well as to honor the survivors. The music is offered as a tribute to their great strength and courage in the face of a terrible tragedy. Frank Ticheli also wrote this piece with the hope that people everywhere never lose sight of how fragile and precious life is and how intimately connected we are as human beings.

The work begins at the bottom of the ensemble's register and ascends gradually to a heartfelt cry of hope. The main theme that follows, stated by the horns, reveals a more lyrical, serene side of the work. A second theme, based on a simple repeated harmonic pattern, suggests yet another, more poignant mood. These three mooods - hope, serenity, and sadness - become intertwined throughout the work, defining its complex expressive character. A four-part canon builds to a climactic quotation of the Columbine Alma Mater, followed by an offstage trumpeter, suggesting a celestial voice: a heavenly message. The Bearden Symphonic Band has abridged this piece from its original form with the addition of the Columbine Alma Mater sung in SATB. In each performance, as our students sing the Alma Mater, it is our hope that they will connect to and convey the fact that every student shares the same sadness, serenity and hope as the students of Columbine High School."

Since they played on the actual anniversary of Columbine and since it was the same week as the VA Tech shootings, it was quite emotional. There was not a dry eye in the house as they finished to a standing ovation. Geez, I'm almost crying as I type this and am listening to this beautiful piece. It gave me chills to witness these fine young people performing this most haunting piece in honor of those brave students that day, students just like them.

They performed several other pieces: Fanfare for a Golden Sky (Scott Boerma), The Volunteers (John Phillip Sousa), Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra (Domenic Cimarosa), Divertimento For Band (Ira Hearshen), Giants of the Past (perry Elliot/Bill Scott), and Abram's Pursuit (David Holsinger).

Anyway, the band performs in black tuxes and black gowns. Sean, since he plays percussion, was in tails. He looked so handsome and so grown up. My baby.

They also played with the Knoxville Wind Symphony at the historic Tennessee Theater downtown last May. I'm going to try and attach a picture (wish he was smiling!) . . .

Wow, Kim, that piece is gorgeous! It gave me chills -- I can't imagine how much more emotional and thrilling it must have been to hear it live. Sean is blessed to have the opportunity to play with such a talented group.

And doesn't he look dapper! :)

Thanks, Amy. :D Sean is really blessed to have had the band director he has at the high school. This man is AMAZING and such a great mentor for the kids. Sean loves him. My mom and dad came all the way from Wisconsin to see Sean play with the band at this performance. They were so impressed with the kids' professionalism and how well they performed. It was a day to remember, most definitely.

Amy, your post reminded me. There are two concerts coming up that I need to get tickets for if they are still available: Etta James and Elvis Costello. Hmmm . . .

BTW, we saw Jackson Browne in concert on Friday. He was awesome. Just him, fifteen acoustic guitars and a keyboard. For almost three hours. Fantastic!
