did stomach and ribcage ever return to "normal"?

    Hi There,

My twins just turned one a few weeks ago and I was expecting my body to be back to somewhat normal. Everyone says it takes about a year to snap back.. and this is worrying me.. It's been a year and I find that my new body is quite strange. I think my whole ribcage and hip bones are still stretched out. My stomach is still sagging as well. I work out three times a week and weigh less than pre-pregnancy, but my new proportions have got me down. I know I shouldn't be so fixated on this, but I find it difficult going through these dramatic changes. How long did it take other moms to shrink back? Does it take more than a year? I'm sure hoping so!

My girls are 13 months old and my upper stomache is back to normal - around my rib cage is the same size. But my boobs are bigger than they were pre-pregnancy (and not in a good way, in a saggy way) and my lower abdominals below the belly button still have extra skin. It's not noticable with pants on but my bikini-wearing days are definitely over unless that goes away. I'm still hoping it goes away on its own and that my breasts shrink some more too.

I'm not sure my ribcage is back to normal. I think there are some things that still get out of shape, but you can visit us in Health, Fitness and Weight Loss forum to strategize for the parts you are working on! :)

Thanks for posting this. I've been wanting to ask the same questions, especially about the rib cage (I've already given up on the stomach ever snapping back. :) )

I'm fairly certain that I am living with a new version of normal and will never look just like my former self. Although I also weigh less, my boobs are saggy and my butt is flatter and droopier than it was pre-pregnancy. I don't work out as much as I should, but I am active in general. My stomach isn't completely flat but I could still wear a bikini without offending too many people ;) . Overall, I am glad to live with this new body in exchange for the beautiful children that I have, even if my now-saggy boobs can be rather frustrating!

I'm much worse than I was pre-pregnancy regardless of what I do to correct it. I've sorta given up. However, that could just be my genes.

My boys are 18 months old and I've given up as well. I have a HUGE separation in my abdomen (mainly in the belly button area...i look pregnant) and my breasts are horrendous. I would love to say that I feel totally happy with my body every time I look at my boys but I would be lying. I would throw myself in front of a moving train for them, but when they go to sleep and it's just me the woman, not me the mommy, I get really down about my body. What makes me feel even worse is that I spent all my adolescent and young adult life picking my body apart and obsessing about even the tiniest imperfection (and looking back on it I realize just how fantastic it was...not bragging since that body's long gone). Now I would do anything to have it back. I've recently decided to switch my focus to trying to appreciate the body I was left with as it does have one or two positives. I know it could be much worse. So to answer your question, no, my stomach did not return to normal and my ribcage did only recently. Hang in there!

Mine is not back to normal and never will be. My ribs are normal (I think), but my stomach bulges out just below my ribs -- it really makes me look pregnant. I wouldn't care so much about the twin skin, because that's not visible when I have clothes on, and even the lower-tummy flab is not such a big deal. But the upper-tummy bulge really bothers me. Still, not much I can do about it.

Going on two years, and definitely not what it was before. I weigh just a few pounds more than I did pre-pregnancy, but I don't come even close to wearing my pre-pregnancy clothes. I could lose those few pounds and 20 more and still not fit those clothes.

I've come to grips with the fact that normal before is not normal now. I still want to get into better shape than I am now, but I will never be the same shape I was before. (And given my boobs went from B cup to D cup, DH can deal with the mid-section flab!)

I never noticed any real change in my rib cage. The skin on my stomach will never be the same though, I can tell you that. I only gained 38 lbs when I was pregnant with the boys but I ended up with lots of stretch marks and my belly button is now very odd. My bikini days are over!

My babes are over 4, and I have a different body than what I began with. I even lost all the weight and got to my lowest after the twins, but still can't wear the same size jeans because of twinskin. :(

However, I have come to terms with it and now trying to work with what I have.

I am little, smaller than anyone expected... but I have that scrunchy old lady skin on my belly and my breasts will never be the same again (to be fair, my twins are 3&4). I can't blame all of this on the twins  . My ribs still bulge a little down at the bottom, but I broke my breast bone in h.s.

Seriously I was just thinking about this the other day! Here are some of the thoughts that went through my head around their 18-month birthday...

I'm a small D - up from the B cup I used to be. They aren't as perky - but heck, I'm not 18 anymore! Fredericks makes some great bras that haul them back north.... Rib cage is the same, but pre-preggo shirts do not fit due to increased boobage. I did get a few stretch marks on them but now they are faded. They were really noticeable for a long time.

According to DH, my butt is the same...pre-preggo jeans fit because luckily I didn't end up with twin skin. Maybe it was because I'm tall and long-waisted.... ? my belly got BIG but was kind of flat. I didn't get that "bullet" look.

I'm softer in my lower belly, but some sit-ups and less chocolate would probably help that. I basted my belly with Tummy Butter 2X a day, which I swear helped prevent stretch marks.

I do think it took the full 18 months to recover....and it's not like time stands still, so I like to believe some things are just going to happen because I'm getting older!

Because I am short and my boys were semi big the way they were positioned permanently pushed my sternum out. I asked the doc and he said it is nothing to worry about. Some discomfort and if I bend just the right way it catches on something so I have to shift.

Everyone is so different. My body pretty much went back to normal within a year. I lost all the weight (60 lbs) and had a flat tummy again. Luckily I didn't end up with any stretch marks or loose sagging skin but my boobs, oh my poor boobs. I was a full C before my kids, bf for 4 months and they shrunk to a small B. I was miserable with them. None of my old clothes fit and they just looked sad. I had a breast augmentation 7 months ago it was the BEST thing I could have done!

I'm sooooo happy to know that your rib cage can move! hahaha. My husband and I have been talking about this for months now. We werent sure if my ribs were really sticking out that far or if it was just b/c my stomach is different.
As for my after prenancy body...it could be way worse then it is. I worked very hard all through my prenancy to do cocoa butter at least twice a day. I have no stretch marks thankfully. There was no help for around my belly button area though. That looks like cottage cheese? And my stomach muscles are gone....forever :-( I'm now back to my normal size maybe even smaller and fitting in my old clothes. It took awhile to get there. I think I lost the weight the fastest when the boys started running. AWWWW!

I swear that could be a picture of my tummy. Though I do not have any visible stretch marks anymore ( my twins 4.5 yrs old) My tummy looks just like yours otherwise.
