I posted about this in another recent thread, but Kid K'nex are the best spent money for any toys we've ever had. The girlies got a set in a zippered tub that opens out to a play mat, for Christmas a few weeks after their 3rd birthday. They're 5 1/2 and those toys still get played with at least a few times a week, sometimes still daily. I'm sure they played with them every day for at least the first 6 months. The next Christmas they each got another set, one made Elmo as a pirate and one made Abby Cadabby. They're all called Santa Blocks at our house. Spencer plays with them more than the girlies now, but they still often sit down with him and build things. And even my older boys play with them some, with the smaller kids. It's a really great set. They work with the Duplo blocks, can do so much with all the different kinds of joining blocks, wheels, and other parts. I highly recommend them!

My DD got a Little Mommy Newborn Twins playset that she still plays with. DS got a toy washing machine that he still plays with. They both got a Buzz Lightyear figure and a Super Why figure that they still play with. My DD also got a Olivia dollhouse that she and DS love to play with. Also Alfie the robot is a big hit here.

Do you have boys or girls? Imaginext toys are the best for boys! We are 4 1/2 and still play with them.

Dress up clothes, Franklin books, art supplies. I'd skip the Leapster and such until they're a bit older...

Oh yes I agree ! Mine are turning 7 and STILL play with theirs. Leapsters are great too we've always loved ours. Mine got GeoTrax for their 3rd birthday and loved those as well.

Dress up clothes doesn't have to be like a Disney outfit or some super hero. Get a couple of great scarves, some hats, belts, maybe an extra small women's labcoat (would still be too big, but that can be fun for dressup), some strings of beads, various largish pieces of fabric. Kids have great imaginations and personally I think these are better for them than store-bought outfits. Do you sew at all? I made cloaks from directions I found online for my 11 and 8 year old boys for Christmas and they were a HUGE hit. They can play Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, a magician, Robin Hood, a Knight and more. You could get a tub or toy box and decorate or simply label it Dress Up and fill it with various fun things and be the hit of the party! In our dressup box, I don't think there's anything that was sold as a dressup outfit. It's just full of the things I mentioned, as well as previous Halloween costumes (most of which I made). One big hit still is a Jack Sparrow wig I made about 8 years ago by dyeing a mop (herein an old, ugly scrapbook page I did, LOL).
