Hello! My girls I believe have reflux. However, how do I know its not bad gas or colic?? Also, I need info on Prevacid. I do not know much about it, any there any long-term effects and what dose was your child taking??

    Thanks for advice,
    Jen

My pedi GI said typical symptoms are one or more of the following: back arching, screaming during feedings, spitting up blood, and projectile vomiting. I probably forgot something. Anyway my guy only had the first 2 symptoms and got complete relief from Prevacid, 7.5 mg in the morning. I did not research long-term effects but since my dr specializes in babies and children GI issues and is extremely thorough (spending a whole hour for a simple exam) I guess I blindly trust her. Good luck!

It seems that both my girls have symptoms for both reflux and colic. How do I know whicj one they may have??

I would see a pedi GI; they handle all tummy/intestinal system issues. They even did an upper GI series on one of my guys to confirm the reflux. Unfortunately mine isn't accepting new patients but she is part of the Cleve Clinic team (main campus) which is excellent. Closer to your side of town than mine! Call ASAP, sometimes there's quite a wait to get in. But they call Fridays their 'access days' and sometimes can get you in that same week, that Fri.

It could be a little of both actually, and now, I have heard that many docs are starting to believe that most colic is actually reflux. The only way to actually prove that it's reflux, is to get an upper GI done, and even sometimes those can be inconclusive.

Jake has been on Prevacid for 4 months now, and the only side effect is a much happier baby! He takes 15mg a day in a solutab.

My girls have reflux. Zantac did NOT work for us. They are now on prevacid, 7.5 mlg in the morning for each girl. that's half of a solutab for each of them and we have had wonderful luck with it!

I was going to say this exactly!

My boys were on 15 mg. of Prevacid (or as I call it 'our miracle drug'). Theirs was the powder kind that dwe mixed in water and then gave it to them in a syringe. They liked the taste of it. They were on it until 8 months. They never spit up much (a little though but not like others talk about) but they screamed and arched their back during feedings and after feedings (prior to taking the medicine). They also cried throughout the day so I think I had reflux babies and babies who liked to cry during the day (colicky). Lucky us!

At first I did not get an upper gi because the sings were enough for my dr to give the meds. But Nicholas had a separate breathing issue that led us to an upper gi dr and he did confirm the reflux as he tested for this other issue.

I was going to say what everyone else has said. Prevacid was a wonder drug for us. Zantac didn't do diddly. I know that Noah was a much happier baby once we got him on the Prevacid

From what I've read and what my doctor (s) GI specialist and pedi, colic is an undiagnosed condition which many times is reflux.
Our guys have reflux (screaming during bottles, arching, spitting up) and were on Prevacid..BUT I had so much trouble getting it into them that we switched to Prilosec liquid form and that seems to have helped. They are also on Zantac 2x's a day.

I've heard the same thing. Zatac worked for my oldest DD, but not the twins. They were both on prevacid until they were 12 months. It worked great. They were also on the solutab.
