i saw the infomercial for this today. seems pretty interesting! here's a link..

im thinking about looking into it, reading reviews, etc. sure would be better for them to watch THAT on tv rather than episodes of what not to wear :) hehe i know, bad mommy, but the only ME time i get is watching tv, and they happen to like it too! the react the same way to the mobile in their crib, so i cant imagine its doing THAT much damage!

Yuck... It does make much more damage.

lol thanks for your opinion, but if its gonna be negative, i think the majority of us would like if you kept it to yourself. you raise your babies, i'll raise mine. and in 10 years if theyre that different, and yours are einsteins, i'll be more than happy to kiss your @$$ :)

Well, you said you can't imagine it doing much damage, I just figured I'd correct your mistake. You can just do a google search on TV and babies and see for yourself. And I never claimed it makes babies dumb or something... Ugh.

After that it's really none of my business what to do with your kids.

Yikes... ladies, no need to fight.

About the "Your baby can read" series... it seems like a gimmick to me, but I've never tried it. In my opinion, there's not much value in pushing your kids to read early through television and DVD programs. They can learn quite easily just by you reading to them and showing them letters, etc.

That said, if you are interested in TV programs for your babies, how about the Baby Einstein series? Or the Signing Times series? They're both "educational" and geared towards young kids.

lol i suppose i did ask for thoughts, didnt realize people were so fiesty on the topic of TV. to be honest, if i can get 1 quiet watching the tube for a 1/2 hour so i can deal with another very, very cranky baby than the TV it shall be! it did sound like a gimmick, but SOME of what the guy said seemed true. though i think if i saw a 1 y/o reading a book in person i might be a lil bit freaked out.

I definetly do agree that babies/children are sponges! I have some baby einstein flashcards that I show them sometimes at meal times as well as some number and letter flash cards. I think rather then using a television to teach them, I like the idea of me doing it, although I don't think that TV is a horrible thing for them (in moderation).

melissa, thats an awesome idea, i didnt even know baby einstein made flash cards. i cant wait to start reading with them, i have a whole TON of books ive been collected through the past 5 years or so. i love reading, even thought i dont get to do it much anymore. i think if i tried reading to them now they'd just look at me funny, but im gonna give it a try anyway. maybe when theyre 5 months adjusted they'll be more interested. now they still act like 3month olds, i cant wait to do more fun stuff.

Someone just recently asked the same question here on TS. I tried to find the thread, but couldn't. Anyways, I bought the series 5 years ago for DD1 They were VCR tapes at the time. I was never consistent enough with the amount of time she was suppose to watch it. So she never did learn to read. I did love the the songs and some of the things they did on there. My twins will watch it, but like I said I can never remember to play it enough for it to matter. So I'm not sure if it actually works, but if you are interested I would look first on eBay. I think the price is a bit ridiculous.

I learned to read before I was 15 months old. There has never been a time in my life that I don't remember knowing how to read. So, yes it is possible.

However, It didn't exactly get me any further in life. ;)

I am not sure about the series you posted but I will share what videos helped my children learn their letters and sounds. It is the Leap From Letter Factory. I think I started showing it to them shortly after they turned one...maybe closer to 15 months. I find no harm in language rich videos. I guess the proof is in my boys. I also think that videos helped my boys enrich their vocabulary skills. Especially the singing ones. I love the Baby Signing Time series. Flash cards also were such a big part of helping add to their language.

eta- also books! They have more books then toys probably and because they were exposed to them so early and so often, they 'read' just as much as they play with their other toys.

First, I will start by saying I am a reading specialist.

You don't need to spend money on that. Your babies will get FAR more from you reading to them than from watching a tv program. You can do the exact same thing, and it will probably work better. Plus, it is important for your babies to handle books, and see you read to them from them. That teaches babies very important things about books (concepts of print). Those videos won't do that. I wouldn't waste my money. Go out and buy a lot of books with that same money you'd spend on the videos.

Why would we want our babies to read? I hope they just get to be babies for awhile.

was just wondering if anyone else had seen them, and what they thought about it. its so creepy to see a 12month old saying big words! lol thanks hinSD! glad to hear what you said from a professional point of view.

Interesting. Was just about to post a thread about me watching too much TV - it keeps me sane - and they pay little attention to it. But reading this has made me feel better about it! SkyNews must surely be educational. On the reading front - like the idea of flashcards as one of my babes will love to chew them!

you can start now :) they may look at you funny the first few times, but then they'll get used to it and look at the book. i started reading to my girls at 3 months old (before bed, the same 3 books every night till they were 8 mos old), and now my girls LOVE books. if i open a book and start to read, they drop what they're doing and fly over to me. aaand now they try to "read" to me lol they point to the pictures and "read" and then clap (i clap after every book :D )
i say if you love to read, you can start reading to them now (it takes up time in the day, too ;) )

I just had to jump in here really quick!
First of all, I think some people are WAY too anti-tv and then some are way too much tv. I fall somewhere in the middle. I watched tv
growing up. As a matter of fact, I remember watching Knott's Landing and the Young and the Restless with my mom at a very young age.
However...I also remember a million picture books my mom read with me. And...for as much tv as I watched, I was outside playing just as
    much, even more!

We all had the friends whose parents were so "intellectual" that it was such a big deal about the whole tv thing, they weren't allowed to watch it or they could watch it for like seven minutes or something dumb like that. Then, that kid would come to your house and sit in front of the tv mesmerized.
Ok, I'm sorry...but some of those kids were just weird.

I watched tv, climbed trees, read books, and attended a great public (farm country) school. I turned out just fine. I have a bachelor of science degree in communications and a master of science degree in education with...guess what... a reading endorsement license and I work with struggling readers!

So, with all of that said. I really don't think there is any reason to push a baby to learn to read. My girls are doing great, they are ahead of the game in all the milestons and I think part of it is just that is the way they are. But, I also like to think that the fact that I am on the floor with them CONSTANTLY, playing with them, talking to them, singing, etc, that it has helped them to make sounds and interact. I also read all of the little Leslie Patricelli books, Baby Happy Baby Sad, No No Yes Yes, and other to the girls every single night. They love them! At three months they sit in my lap and look at the pages and watch me turn the pages...it is so awesome!

So, don't worry about your baby needing to read at 10 months. I agree with you, that would freak me out if I saw a baby reading a book. Actually, I would probably run away screaming...
I think parents try to overload kids these days, everyone has to be a flipping einstein. No. My babies are going to be babies and my kids are going to be kids. I don't want my 6 yr. old doing my taxes...

I just had to share a funny earlier reader story (IMO)… my older ds has a VERY bright friend (like read the WHOLE Harry Potter Series in Kindergarten… alone… shoot I was getting confused and had to use a dictionary every once and a while)… well I went to take him and his mom to the air port when he was 3… granted my DS was just talking (my son was one of those early moved late talkers… any who back to the story…) well you know the kind of business they can have around airports (especially in LA)… well all of a sudden he says, “Of course I want my naked body alive”… his mom say… “What do you mean”… he says… “That sign over there say ‘live nudes’… I don’t want to be naked and dead….” I just giggled…” Hey knowledge is power… School House Rock taught me THAT”

OK sorry just had to share... i will remember that moment for the rest of my days

I wouldn't waste my money on the videos. I would rather put in Sesame Street, my ds has learned alot from that show! I have a degree in Early Childhood Education, and in every single class I took we were told how important reading is. Like a pp said, you can read to your babies now even though you won't think they are learning anything. Your voice changes when you read, and they will pick up on vocabulary, especially if you point the the objects as you say their name. I have board books all over my house, and the babies are just now starting to pick up the books to look at them, or come onto my lap and pay attention as I read. They even both have a favorite book. My older DS LOVES books....as you can tell I am a huge supporter of reading to young kids (but the tv comes in handy too!)

I read to mine myself. It's so much more interactive. They can ask me questions (they still do) and I can respond. Videos can't do that.

My 2 cents - if you want to promote reading skills, then just love books. Read to your kids, make reading an important part of your life, and let them see that it's important to you. Go to libraries, go to bookstores, go to storytime. Let them chew up their cardboard books, let them take plastic books into the bath...

It is crazy... I just saw a portion of this infomercial a few days ago and am considering it. There is a money back gaurantee!

I am HUGE into reading, but with 5 kids I can't always pull out a book when one of the little ones needs to be entertained. I do use the t.v. , as I have posted (and been criticized for) before. I believe that in moderation it is okay, perhaps even beneficial. I have two that need homework help, participate in outside activities that require my attention, as well as a needy 2 yo who I should mention is potty training. Yikes! There just isn't enough of me to go around. At times I NEED the t.v.

My two oldest knew how to read well before kindergarten, and I took heat from some people about not letting them be kids. Well, if you make things fun it becomes a form of play. (It is like the twins' PT.... at first they didn't like it and it was a chore for all 3 of us. Now it is part of our play time twice a day!)

I feel that anything that might help us and our children get safely and happily through each day is a good thing. (Again, all things in moderation!) I will let you all know how it goes if I decide to try the program with my three youngest....

I credit the fact that my son (now 28.5 months old) IS actually starting to read words (he can spell his name, his sisters name and a few 3 and 4 letter words) from reading to him and also the best thing for your kids to watch is Sesame Street! They BOTH have known their alphabet to say it and to see it since 18 months old...they know all their colors, shapes and animals (and the sounds they make) from watching shows like Sesame Street, Zoobomafoo, etc...their newest favorite show now is Word World...it teaches them that letters make words - in a very entertaining and funny animal show! (yes I even look forward to watching it!)

TV (as long as it is decent educational TV) isn't a horrible thing - I'm sorry I don't buy into it...I watched Sesame Street as a kid and started reading by the time I was 3 and writing at 4....I also watched Looney Toons and never threw anyone off a cliff with an umbrella and a sign - but thats for a different thread...

if you have public television - the daytime shows are great for kids...oh and I was a big Food Network fan when they were little and fussy

Right! Think of the cartoons we used to watch where they blew each other up with dynamite!

I think that there is nothing wrong with the program. You can use it in conjunction with books or any other reading or educational tools out there. We all want the best for are children and we should experiment with the abundance of options out there.

We all have different styles when it comes to parenting, and I would not say anyones method is better than the others.

Just do what you feel is best!
