Yikes! Drinking from open cups

I have no idea why I started this, but a couple days ago, Bea was rejecting her cup because it wasn't the right color or whatever, so I said "do you want to drink with the lid off?" because they love drinking out of my glass, and she was all for that. So of course Ainsley wanted the lid off too, and now that's all they want. They do OK when they are actually drinking, it's when they start sticking their hands in the cup or pouring out the water that makes me go what have I done. The rule is also lids can be off ONLY if it's water, and we are at the table. If they want to get down with their cups, lids have to be on. They also found out by blowing through the spout on the sippy cup lid, they can make a duck call sound. It was quite funny.

You're brave Kelly! I have yet to do open cups with mine. They enjoy throwing their sippies way too much still  They do use open cups at preschool though.

Must be the age. Trent threw a fit earlier today because he couldn't get the lid unscrewed on his straw cup. It was a bit unnerving because he was using the correct technique and he would have gotten it if the lid hadn't been on so tight. We've been letting them have open cups at mealtimes but they get water in sippies when they're not strapped into highchairs. They LOVE open cups and they can use them without spilling but they often get silly or don't pay enough attention and end up making a mess.

Mine were a little older when we tried this. I agree with you that if they don't want lids then they have to be at the table drinking water only. We actually started by giving them straws in open cups so they didn't have to tip the cup back. Then we moved on to small cups that were only filled half-way.

That was one of the big reasons I did not want to start open cups. Maybe it's the novelty, but they have yet to throw their cup when the lid is off. That is a big plus, the sound of a sippy cup hitting the floor is like nails on a chalkboard.

My girlfriend just told me this morning that she was told to have her two year drink out of open cups to help with speech. We have started it but man, is it messy. However, I too hate the sound of the sippy cups hitting the floor, the wall, or the other child. I guess I will have to suck it up and deal with it. I wish us all the best of luck.

We just started as well. We only let them use them in their highchairs and put just a little bit of water in there. They do pretty good with it until they want to put their food in and "stir the soup". If they start to play with it, I tell them that's it and their cup gets taken away. Danielle holds it funny, but doesn't spill much. Rachel holds it properly, but spills much more. Go figure.

I have these tiny little cups for them to practice with and they had milk in an open cup and Martin spilled his, so I took it away but Ali had thirds on her milk out of her special cup! I'm hopeful we can get this going!!! HATE DEALING WITH SIPPIES!!! (I don't mind the one's with the raised lip and single piece valve, but UGH!!! Avent Sippies!)
