Yet another poop question (what stops them up?)

My babycenter toddler update this week talked about "what to do when your toddler is constipated." The article mentioned that dairy foods can be constipating, which I had no idea about, but it explains why my kids' poops are so hard, because they live largely on yogurt and cheese!

So I was just wondering what other foods are lurking out there that are constipating them and I didn't know it. What stops your kids up? (I have a suspicion about blueberries -- although I'm not sure they are constipating, so much as that they just make their poop look/smell very odd.)

And what's your favorite remedy? I know about (but haven't had to resort to) diluted juice. I do sometimes give them baby food pears and prunes, and that seems to help.

Bananas can constipate. Infact i remeber when my girls were babies and they got really sick and they had really runny poop I would give them bananas to "thick" things up.

When my son was a baby I remember he was having a hard time going poop for a few days so I gave him prunes mixed with apple juice. That seemed to help him out.

I have heard to much white bread can plug kids up as well.

Corn! One of my girls is a fanatic and we cannot let her have it too often.

Certainly dairy products can be consipating. As well as wheat products (bread, pasta, rice, etc) Supplemental iron and calcium can be binding as well.

I always remember to do the reverse of the "BRAT" diet. That is recommended when kids have diarrhea to bind them. BRAT is an acronym for (Bananas, Rice, Apples, and Toast).

As far as unplugging them. Some special weapons I use...full strength juice and a little "Karo syrup" in their milk. My friend buys "Aloe Vera" extract at a health store. Its a tasteless juice and she swears by it to keep her son regular.

    Bananas get us every time.

We have used all of the following with good results, but now that the boys are on solids, we go straight to the prunes (careful not to give it before bed...learned that lesson the hard way!)

    *Diluted apple juice
*1/4 t. Light Karo Syrup in 4 oz. liquid
    *Prunes

I add wheat germ to their yogurt, since they have yogurt almost every day. Ever since I started doing that, they have been pretty regular. Too much milk and cheese will stop them up, mine also love dairy so I really have to watch it.

Ooo, great idea about the wheat germ.

I must have given them something that un-stopped them, because we've had "pudding" poops (as opposed to "patties" or "pellets") for a day or two, but I'm not sure what it was!

I've found a great way to unplug mine but it will only work if your kiddos are eating more solid type foods. Mandarin oranges and raisins. That good old fiber will loosen them up! Also, the prunes and apple juice works well too. Good luck!
