yet another... ID or Frat?

Well, I'm super curious now. My twins just turned 4 months old. I have always assumed they were fraternal because I have frats in my family, and there were two placenta. Their blood type is the same, so that didn't rule out ID. I know that there is still a chance that they are identical, and hadn't really questioned it until the past couple of weeks when people looking at them comment about how they are hard to tell apart. I'm kind of tired of not knowing for sure, and giving a long answer when people ask. Also I'm finding that I'm always analyzing them for similarities and differences, and just want to know.

To me, they look quite different, but I am their mother and spend a lot of time with them, and have seen moms of IDs on this site shocked to find out that their twins aren't fraternal after doing DNA testing. I must admit that their faces are quite similar, but their hair and head shapes are very different. When they wear hats, even up close, it's hard for me to tell them apart. Without hats, it's simple: one has always had hair that sticks up about an inch in the back, and the other has never had enough hair to stand up at all.

So one question is for parents of IDs: i know the head shapes could be different from how they were inside the womb, but what about their hair? Is it possible to have hair that different on IDs?

And my other question, of course....what do you experts think? ID or Frat?

Identical. Mine had different hair until they reached a year.

I vote ID! One of mine has much thicker hair. My friend who has identical girls can tell my boys apart by feeling their hair. Her twins are 18 months old and one has way more hair too!

 

ok.. you sound EXACTLY like me! frats ran in the family... 2 placentas... assumed they were frats all along until 3.5-4 months when people started asking (and especially with hats on!)... I couldn't see the pics on FB so browsed through your blog (so cute!) and my guess is for ID!

Yep, ID, I think. My guys have different amounts of hair and different shaped faces making it very easy for me to tell them apart. They are ID though.

All you have to do is go to picture #23 in the first lot of pics you posted. (On facebook)

Take your hands and make 2 circles (thumb and mid finger) put them on the computer screen so all you can see is their eyes nose and mouth.

No idea who is who.. right?

This is how you know they're identical. They have the EXACT same face.

Your comment about the hats made me laugh because that is like me as well. When my girls have hats on, I can't tell who was who but with hats off I can tell.

 

I was thinking frats until I saw the picture with the bonnets and know i don't know. Very cute girlies though.

I vote identical. My boys are identical and Clay has a mohawk down the center of his head and not much hair anywhere else and Cooper's hair sticks straight up.

 

Thank you all so much for the guesses. I guess it is time to do dna testing, because i can't bring myself to believe they are ID without proof. My husband likes the "suspense" and the debating over this, so he doesn't want to test yet. It's driving me crazy though, and I just have to know. We both think they are frats, (who doesn't when the zygosity is unknown?) so maybe showing my husband all the votes for ID will make him want to test too. I'll let you know when we get results. Thank you for the comments!

What the...is "zygosity" a real word? It never shows up in spell checks.

 

The newborn pics I was thinking frat but as the pics went on I'm thinking definitely ID! So stinking cute too!!!

I've changed my mind.

I think they're fraternal.

We sent our DNA test today to DNA Solutions. I'll let you know the results when we find out! I feel like an excited kid waiting for Christmas!

 

I'm so glad you're testing!! I'm in the same boat and am anxiously awaiting my swabs for the testing. There is a BIG history of twins in my fam (every female on my mothers side either had twins or miscarried with them). I still think fraternal for mine, but I think ID for yours!!

Brings back so many memories of waiting for results. I vote ID! Have fun waiting. Opening the envelope is like Christmas morning.
BTW: I can't tell mine apart with hats on AT ALL! I feel so horrible about it too, but it's simply impossible.

You can phone them also. That's how I was told.

 

Ok, fist of all, your girls are precious!

I did not find out my boys were id until they were 2. One of my sons had torticollis too. Sure makes it easier to tell who is who right!?!?! I am so bad with this game especially with infants. I am really curious though!!!
