Yet, another caffeine question....

So I went in for NST test today and the nurse noticed that my pulse was a bit high, so she asked if I had any caffeine today and i said yes, small iced mocha (one shot of espresso w/ milk.) She said that maybe this is why it's little higher than normal. So I started telling her (which I prolly shouldn't have) that I drink one small mocha almost every day just to keep up with my toddler and daily chores, and she said that this was a lot of caffeine. I informed her that one cup of drip coffee is higher in caffeine than one shot of espresso, she still didn't believe me so she asked another nurse who told her the same thing I told her.

Anyhow, my point of this post is to ask some of you mama's if any of you are drinking caffeine on a regular basis. That dumb nurse left me feeling very guilty for consuming my daily mocha. UGH! I shouldn't let it get to me but you know with all the hormones raging, it did :(

Thanks for you help ladies..... :)

Oh I know some say it is bad but I couldn’t’ live with out at least a little caffeine everyday. I am just not the strong LOL. I didn’t completely give it up with my DS and now I need it just to try and keep up with him….which isn’t working. Don’t beet yourself up there are a whole lot worse things during pregnancy then caffeine.

I'm sorry she gave you a hard time about it! My doctor said its fine. I started drinking coffee in order to improve constipation (it worked)

Now I feel the little jumping beans get excited after I have a cup, so that is all the reminder I need to limit it to one cup per day! (as much as I like feeling them move, its no reason to keep them caffeinated up)

I drink a cup of coffee every single morning...probably 10 to 12 oz with milk. Don't worry about it.

i was really good in the first and second tri about not drinking caffeine, but find that now I sometimes just have to have a diet coke. i do okay with the decaf starbucks for a treat, but when it come to diet coke, caffeine all the way, I maybe drink it once or twice a week. . .i don't think that at this point it hurts anything!

I didn't have any coffee until my second trimester. I now have a cup of coffee a day but sometimes two or a soda. I would't worry about it.

I drink one (some days 2) diet sodas a day. I used to drink a lot more, and have cut back to this since pregnant. It is my only "vice" or "bad" thing I do when pregnant and my Dr. knows that I do this and has never once told me to stop or said that it is bad. I think it is probably fine to drink one small mocha a day ;)

Yes - unfortunately I do. I didn't drink any caffeine during the 1st trimester, but same as you I need to keep up with my 2 year old, the housework while continuing to work full-time until 28 weeks. I usually have a 6 oz cup of half caf in the morning and one in the late afternoon; or I have a coke in late afternoon. I never have more than that and there are some days I don't have any at all, but at times I do need it to function. I'm hoping that after I'm done working I won't need at much.

You're allowed a small amount like equivalent to two cups a day. I can't drink or eat any because my feel my heart race after one sip so it affects me terribly. I love iced coffee and every few weeks will get one decaf but it really isn't the same without the espresso. But it's still good.

I have to have my cup of coffee when I get up. Then if we go out to eat or are out and about and I want a diet soda I dont hesitate. I do drink a ton of water though.

i didn't start drinking coffee till my 2nd trimester, mostly cuz i didn't want it. i have a cup almost every day. like a pp said, it helps with my constipation! sometimes i'll even have a shot of espresso to "move things along". and i'll have soda if i crave it. the doc said it's ok. and my mom said she had coffee everyday when she was pregnant and we came out fine. just drink a ton of water.

I drink caffeine everyday... My OB said it is fine, as long as I am not drinking it excessively. She says it is fine in moderation. But I totally know what you mean about people giving you a hard time when they see you drinking a caffeinated drink, and most of the time the people trying to make you feel guilty about it have no kids and have never been preggo!

I have always been a big pop drinker and I could not cut it out completely when I was pregnant. DH is a huge coffee drinker so it was really hard to resist everytime he stopped at starbucks. I think that if you need that to keep up with your little one then so be it. I needed it and I didn't have another child to keep up with, a twin pregnancy really takes a toll on your energy level!

Here is a site I found from a reliable source (American Pregnancy Association) that's based on real research. Basically, they say, the less you drink the better, but less that 150-300 mg is what is recommended. They also have a chart with the caffeine content of a few popular drinks.

    Hope this helps!

I have a cup of coffee each morning. I don't think I would get out of bed if it wasn't for that!

I've heard under 300 mil which is two cups of coffee. I have a cup everyday. Sometimes when I order a cup of coffee the coffee person will say "decaf?" and I say "no" and they look at me funny. I think it's odd. It's my only vice - I've given up lunch meat, soft cheese, pop etc. I'm extremely careful about everything that goes into my mouth and if I want a cup of coffee - well - you better believe I'm going to have it. I just go with what the majority of OB's and major pregnancy organizations recommend which is under 300 mil.

Oh, I didn't start having my coffee again until I was about 15 weeks.

I skipped all caffiene the first trimester, but I just ABSOLUTELY COULD NOT keep up with my 1 yo daughter, house chores, etc. So I limit myself to those little bottles of Starbucks coffee mixed with cream from the grocery store. I am an admitted coffee addict, so buying those expensive little bottles is worth it to me because the single serving size keeps me away from "sneaking more".

    I MISS MY COFFEE!!!!!!!!!!!!
