That is right my DS has a yeast infection in his diaper area that he has had for 2 weeks. We went to the pedi and she gave us nystatan (which is monistat) and told us to use barrier cream. It started to clear up at first and then returned even worse.

We took him to after hours pedi (happened Saturday afternoon) and he gave him oral fluconazole. That has done nothing.

He said to leave him without a diaper especially when he sleeps. I CAN"T, even during the fastest diaper change known to man he is scratching at it. I can't hold his hands all day when I have DD crawling around and getting into everything.

He can't be in bed without a diaper not only for the scratching but if he messes, he will roll around in it....gross.

We have an appt Monday with a pedi dermatologist. Any suggestions from anyone who dealt with a persistent yeast infection? Tell me there is an end in sight because I can't stand to see this baby miserable for one more day.

    TIA

Never dealt with a persistant one but have you changed diapers or wipes recently. Maybe cloth diapers would be better until the infection clears up?? Sorry you are going through this.

TIA I'm sorry you have to deal with this. Do you think maybe it is re-infecting from the barrier cream ? I'd throw out all your barrier cream and then when you do need to use it (from a fresh tube) squirt it out onto something.

Ok this might sound crazy but could it be worms ? I'm just thinking that the creams are really good at getting the itch under control, but say something like a cat that has worms ???? Ask the pedi I could be off my rocker. I've heard the check for worms is a piece of tape over the anus and they come out when it is dark and get stuck on the tape. Sorry too much information. Heck warm climates ......

Heather are you referring to tape worms? Those look like little grains of rice so if they cats or baby had them I would see them. Or are you referring to ringworm? It is too widespread to be ringworm. I have had ringworm twice and seen it dozens of times and it doesn't look like it but then again I don't have a woodslamp at home to be sure. I am sure the derm will have some suggestions but I am just anxious to help him out.

Oh and we stopped using the creams once we started the oral meds.

Thanks Rachel, I am going to try cloth diapers today when he wakes up. See you tomorrow at the picnic!

Maybe make sure the dermatologist swabs the rash to check whether it's really yeast or staph? I've read somewhere on here that staph infections can look like persistent yeast.

We also were told not to use wipes, but to clean with soap and warm water. I just took to putting a stack of towels on the changing pad and squirting my guy's bum with warm water, then using another towel to dry really well. It was messier than wipes, but it doesn't leave bacteria behind the way they do.

Good luck - hope he feels better really soon!

I too think the dermatologist should check to see if if is staph vs yeast. Marcus had a really bad yeast infection a couple of months ago that spread from his groin area to everywhere but his face arms and hands. My pedi had no idea what is was so they sent me to the Children's Hospital it turned out to be a yeast infection that irritated his eczema. It was bad no wipes keep the area dry and the prescribed the Nystatin which worked for practically overnight. We also had to give him Benadryl too they thought he could have had an allergy. Good Luck I know how it feels to see it and not know what to do about it while the poor lil baby suffers. :hug99:

We tried everything for DD's yeast infection. My Ped was sure it was yeast. Finally after I was really persistant, she swabbed it. It came back as severe staph. I would seriously look into that and have it swabbed. It cannot hurt!

    Good Luck!

First of all. . .I'll see you tomorrow at the picnic! What size clothes are they in because my two are gargantuan and I've got some b/g twin clothes. . .

Secondly, have you tried giving him yogurt in addition to the micazinole? You also might need to throw away your diaperwipe box and your changing table covers, anywhere his skin might have touched. I had a yeast infection in my armpits a few years back and while the micazinole cleared it up, if I touched anything that had touched my armpits previously (mainly deodorant/bras/clothes) it would reinfect so quickly.

OK, this is a bit different but I had reoccuring YI when I was on BCP. I keep bringing these up in my posts but probiotics is what made them go away. Basically it gets rid of all bad bacteria in your body and restores the good bacteria. You can give it to infants - the one I used for my kids is BioGaia Infant drops (but there are other kinds - just google it). It's also good for if kids have diarrhea or other tummy troubles.

If it is a true yeast infection then I second the probiotics. It's the same things as eating yogurt without the dairy. File this under things to do when you are a 1st time parent and have tried everything else... My first ds had a bad yeast infection years ago and the daycare center owner suggested coating his diaper area with plain yogurt a couple times a day and letting it dry then diapering. I thought they were insane but figured it couldn't hurt so I did and the infection cleared up within a few days. Whether it was the probiotics or the yogurt I can't say.

    Good luck
