My DS turns 3 October 5th and the girls turn 2 November 13th. I was thinking with them so close and Holloween faliing right in the middle of them, that we would throw one big party. I was thinking it would be fun to do a pumpkin carving party in the back yard. Its still usually pretty nice in October around here.

We would still do small family celebrations on thier special days, but for a bigger party combine them. My DH pointed out the issue of presents and having to buy 3 all at once.

So now I am not sure, I do not want to do 3 separate parties, and this is the 1st time I am even considering more than just a very small family gathering since I am not pg and not teaching theater so will have the time.

    What do you think?

I'm going to be faced with the same issue this winter! Girls will be 2 Jan 5th, gabe will be 4 feb 12.

I'll probably keep them separate so they each have their special day.

You can still do a pumpkin party...just label it differently, not a birthday party. Just a fall festival sort of deal!

I think one big party around Halloween and smaller, individual family parties is a perfect idea. That's what I would do at least.

My cousin's birthday is 6/19, my birthday is 6/23, and my sister's birthday is 6/30 - we ALWAYS had big joint family parties while we were growing up. It was never a big deal. We all got separate presents so no one felt upstaged. The parties were almost always thrown on a day that wasn't any of our actual birthdays so that we could have small immediate family parties on those days. I love the idea of a pumpkin carving party. My older son's birthday is 2 days before Halloween and we've often done Halloween themed events - never pumpkin carving though. :) Good luck!

I would say go for it if you want to have one party. Caitlyn's birthday is April 12 and the twins is April 15. When the twins turned three, we had one big party for all of them. Each of them invited their own friends. It worked out very well. This year we had two separate parties but on the same day. The twins had a party at McDonalds at lunch time. Caitlyn had a slumber party that evening.

I would go for it as well. I think a Halloween theme sounds like a blast!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I am going to convince my DH to do it this way. I can not imagine that with all the mulitple families in the world, that this is that unusual. And since they are only doing one party it should save time with the schedules for everyone. I imagine there will be many combo gifts. We are just discovering the joys of Mega Blocks so I bet a few more of those sets will be coming our way.

Anyway, I will let you know how it goes once we get there!

We did a joint party for our 3 youngest kids last September (middle son turned 4 on Sept. 14th & twins turned 2 on Sept. 19th). It worked out great & we plan to do it again this year.

It ended up pretty big because we invited family, friends, and all of our surrounding neighbors but we figured that it equaled the same amount as doing separate parties. We did hot dogs, burgers, veggie dogs, and kiddie snacks. We set up a craft table rented a small moon bounce. It was a total blast!

About the gift issue - We thought it was best to avoid making people bring 3 gifts, so we put on the invitation not to bring gifts and it was a DISASTER! Some people brought gifts anyway, so the people that didn't felt very awkward. And lots of my close friends called me 'Mommy Dearest" for awhile after (for depriving my kids of b-day gifts!). We had just figured our kids get plenty of gifts from family and the party was a gift too, but it really wasn't the right approach. Maybe this year we'll ask people who want to bring a gift to bring a joint gift for all three kids, we're still figuring this out.

Anyway, the group party worked for us!
