Ok, many of you have read my post about Morgan being diagnosed with croup yesterday. Well, here's the deal and I feel kind of stuck. When I took her in yesterday, I thought it was an ear infection. She had had ONE (only one) cough for a few seconds the night before that sounded like a "bark" but other than that nothing. When I took her to the pedi and she was crying the pedi said she could hear what they call a "stridor." I guess that's the sound when they breath in when crying that is related to croup. So, they gave her a prednisone shot and said she'd be better (the croup) in 24 hours.

Fast forward to today. No more coughing, no more "stridor." I'm honestly not even convinced she really had croup. She did wake up this morning with a fever of 100.5 (which I know most pedi's don't consider a fever, but she looked aweful). Motrin kicked it. After 6 hours when she was ready for another dose, she was back up to 100.5. She had a fever of 101.5 Friday afternoon, no fever on Saturday, then those fevers again today. She looks like she feels bad, the little "bags" under her eyes are pink and her eyes are glassy.

Now, in her history of ear infections she's never run a temp and I always catch it on like the first or second day. The only way I can ever tell with her is her eyes getting glassy and just looking like she doesn't feel well. On Saturday, the pedi said her ears were clear. Then, today (Sunday) there's the fever present, if you touch her ears she pushes your hand away...can it get infected that bad over night like that? If so, this would be #6 or 7 for her, but totally different symptoms. Any other time she's had it, you can tug her ear and she never flinched.

I'm so confused! She's sleeping now and I was going to see how she was in the morning. I switched my "in office" day from Monday to Tuesday to be able to be home with her.

WWYD? BTW, thanks to all who made it this far. I'm feeling like a hypochondriac mother [IMG]

Hey Becky! I am so sorry that she is still not feeling well. I would give your pedi a call tomorrow and tell them that she's not doing any better. Our pedi always says that if they are not feeling better 3 days after starting an antibotic to call and let them know. It sounds like she still has the ear infection to me especially with the fever. I hope she gets better soon. It's so hard when they are sick. [IMG]

My kids have had a bizillion ear infections and I always thought I would just "know" when they had another one...I didn't. Just when I thought I knew their pattern, they would throw in a new symptom. But the biggest one that was always there for me was that sleep was always disrupted.
I personally have taken a child in, where their ears looked great one day and two days later they were infected. But my kids have a lot of fluid in their ears so I don't know if that makes a difference. But since the tubes the only one who still gets ear infections is Kenna and she has had maybe 2 since the tubes were put in.
If it were me I would call the ped in the am...maybe youy could just talk to a nurse on the phone and see what she thinks? I call my dr so much I swear they know my voice now!

Good luck and hope she is feeling better soon!

Thanks for your concern Tammy..hehe, but I think you misunderstood. Morgan HAS NOT been diagnosed with an ear infection. She was there yesterday adn they said they ears look fine. But, today, now I think she might have one. She's not on any meds, just had a shot of the prednisone for the croup. I am going to call the pedi in the morning. We didn't see the regular ped yesterday anyway.

I would take her back to the doc. Ali's croup with the stridor etc. went away the next day! It was a fast fix.....

I would at least call and talk to a nurse or doctor. You're right, she might not have had croup, maybe it was a cold in her chest and it's moved into the ears. Poor thing, hope she's better soon!

Becky, my son had a dr. appt. one morning and that night he woke up crying hysterically and could not be calmed. He had never done this previously. I ended up taking him to the ER and they diagnosed him with double ear infections. I explained that we had been at the dr. that morning and his ears were fine. I was told that an ear infection can appear in as little as 1 hour. [IMG] Who knew?

Sounds like another trip to the pedi is in your future!

Hope she is feeling better soon.

It's funny that that is one of your biggest sypmtoms with ear infections b/c they have NEVER affected Morgan's sleep. Shows how all kids are so different. I too have taken her in one day and the next day again and there was an ear infection. UGH! Guess I will call the nurse in the morning. I"m sure they will want me to bring her in though.

    Thanks for your advice everyone.

I would call too. Better safe than sorry. My oldest ds went from being fine to ruptured ear drum in 8 hours. Some ear infections come on fast and hard. Can't hurt to have her ears checked again. I hope she's feeling better this morning!

Well, no more fever this morning (it was 99.8) but still looks like she doesn't feel well. I called the nurse this morning and they think I am crazy...lol, not really. But since her fever has been below 101, I think they were hesitent to have me bring her in again. But, she also hasn't eaten more than 2 bites a meal for the past 2-3 days either. Something isn't right. I'm taking her in at 11:00. I pray that it's nothing, but then again, part of me just wants them to tell me it's an ear infection or something so I can just quit wondering.

I would possibly take her back to the dr. I've had Jessy in to the dr on Saturday(with no ear infection) and back on Tuesday or Wedensday with an ear infection. Ears can look fine one day and be infected the next. Better safe than sorry. Then aain my girls have been to the dr like every week so far this winter. Thank god for no copay.
