So no, I'm not even pregnant, but for whatever reason, I've gotten this stuck in my head and I needed SOMEONE to ask!! :) If we were to ever have a girl, I'm just in love with the name Ellie, but don't know if it's "proper" enough to stand alone as a first name. Eleanore is nice, but I'm not certain it's what I'm going for. I like the name Elizabeth a LOT, but I know most folks go w/ Liz, Lizzie, or Beth as "nick names." We'd definitely call her Ellie, but I wonder once she grew up if she'd prefer something else in a professional environment or whatever.

Thanks for your thoughts!!! I have no idea why I can't get this out of my head... so hopefully y'all will help lay it to rest! :D

Yes. Actually, I've already decided that, if I get pregnant again and have a girl, her name will be Elizabeth and we will call her Ellie. You can too because I don't think we'll be running into each other. :D

I think Ellie is great, and she could always go with Elizabeth for the more professional application.

I think you could definitely do that. I have a friend Ellie and her name is Elisa.

I knew an Elise that was called Ellie sometimes. Funny, I was just watching Ice Age 3 and kept hearing "Ellie" and then I came read your post. I've never heard an Elizabeth called Ellie, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen or can't happend.

I personally think Lizzie is too cute to pass up on, but I wouldn't bat an eye, if someone told me their Elizabeth went by Ellie.

    Definitely do-able!

I have a Gabrielle that's an Ellie! ;) And not many folks have batted an eye at that (at least to my knowledge!) so I think a Elizabeth definitely works.

one of my girls is named ellie- that's her name not a nickname. Her name is Ellie Samantha, she's named after my husbands grandfather who's name was elliot and nickname was eli. So yes, I love the name.

A parent could so it, but I think most strangers wouldn't come up with Ellie from Elizabeth. Most people I know with Elizabeth go by Beth, Liz, or Lizzy for nicknames.

It's my middle name, so I always say Elizabeth in its entirety.

Rachael- :D Looks like great minds think alike!

Angela- Oooh.... I like that you used Gabrielle. That's a beautiful idea!!

Well ok gals! THanks for reassuring me our poor "potential" kid wouldn't be looked at like she had two heads because of her name!! :rotflmbo:

I actually met an Elizabeth who went by Ellie, so our future potential daughters will not be alone. There are dozens of nicknames for Elizabeth (Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Betsy, etc.) if you look in a baby name book, so I think people are pretty open to anything.

I like Ellie for Elizabeth a lot! I also think that Ellie is very nice by itself!

I like it better than Liz. I think its useable. I'm totally about the nickname. We went thru several names because they didn't have goo nicknames

I have an Isabella who goes by Ella or Ellie if we feel lovingly enough. I never liked any other short version of Isabella, I like it in full and I like Ella, but cannot stand Izzie (though this is growing on me, I guess thanks to Grey's anatomy), Isa, or Bella (I hate Bella, sounds like a dog's name to me).

My friends have dubbed my next child Hermione and I am heavily considering it and thinking of shortening it to Minnie. I can do what I want to my children's names I guess.

My grandmother was Elisabeth and went by Elly.

And Millie, I LOVE Minnie for Hermione! That embryo better be a girl!

I like Minnie. I think that's a great nickname for Hermione (and saves her from Hermy).

I actually know three Ellies that are actually Elizabeths. And that's why I am responding. The nickname Ellie is INCREDIBLY popular right now. If you have hopes that your daughter will not share her name with other kids in her elementary school classroom, you may be disappointed in Ellie. I read in some parenting magazine (I forget which) that Ellie was the most common name in both 2007 and 2008 among parents with graduate degrees across the entire US. It doesn't show up on the list of popular names because it's usually a nickname for other names - Elizabeth, Eleanor, Gabriella, Isabella, Elise, etc.

One of my twins is Elizabeth, and we all call her Ella. Of course you can do it!

We do get raised eyebrows when people find out her twin Kara's real name is Katherine. But it works for us!

  21. I think you could do it. My grandad's sister was Elizabeth and went by Lially her whole life which I never heard anywhere else. Elizabeth is one of the most versatile first names as you can shorten it to so many different things, Ellie makes more sense than some of the other options (like my great aunt's!!)
