Would twins born at 35 weeks have to be in the NICU?

On Saturday we will be 35 weeks and I have been on bed rest in the hospital for 8 weeks and one more at home so far. I am wondering what are the odds of the babies born at 35 weeks to come home with me rather than spend time in the NICU. Anyone have any idea?

My boys were born at 35w 1d at 5lbs 11oz and 5lbs 7oz. Sullivan had fluid in his lungs due to the c-section so he needed Oxygen for 24 hours. Finley was completely fine. We did have an amnio that morning to make sure their lungs were mature. I breastfed them, so their weight gain was slow - we ended up in the NICU for 1 week. 48 hours of pre-cautionary antibiotics due to Sullivan's sluggishness (later confirmed as fluid due to c-section). Both boys had the antibiotics b/c they shared the placenta. Day 3 they went on bilirubin lights for jaundice and spent a little over 48 hours on those.

If they had been formula fed only, we would have been discharged on day 4 or so but b/c of the breastfeeding, weak latch, etc. we weren't discharged until day 7.

    Hope that helps! :)

Mine came at 34 weeks. One had to go to NICU and one didn't, so it depends on the child really. Funny thing is the one who didnt have to go to NICU was 2 lbs smaller than the one who did (they were 5.5 and 7.3 lbs !)

Mine were 35 weeks with no NICU, but the doctors were all nervous about it before the birth, at 35 weeks they can go either way. Heck even some full term babies end up in the NICU.

So true! My girls were born at 34w5d and one spend 7 days in the NICU and the other (bigger one) spent 23 days in the NICU. All babies are different!

You are doing SOOOO good to be on bedrest for 8 weeks and soon to be 35 weeks preggers!!!! Great job momma! I know it's so hard, but keep doing what you're doing. I hope that when you deliver, all 3 of you can go home at the same time!

Yup-totally. Mine were bang on 34 weeks to the day and never saw a minute of NICU time! We only had to stay because it's hospital policy that babies born beofre 37 weeks have to have a feeding tube for 5 days. they didn't really need it, and they were never in the NICU. But, like Mel said, some full term babies end up there.
Good Luck! You're in the final stretch-the the fun REALLLLy starts! :D

Mine were born at 35+1 and they were in the NICU for 10 and 14 days, first for breathing problems (doc thought it might be due to an infection, so he sent both, even though only one was having problems), and then we ended up staying for digestive issues, and then as feeders/growers. So...though it was not necessarily imperative that both go at first, it was a good thing that both ended up there in the end. Not sure if a few more days or weeks would have made a difference, but I'm sure I will always second-guess myself. THat's just part of being a mom. Best of luck...the end is near!

my girls were 35.1 went to NICU for stupid reasons - twisted leg on baby A and grunting on B - and didn't come out for 9 days. It was fine for me because I really enjoyed catching up on some much needed sleep before they came home. My friend went till 36 wks and had no NICU time.

My boys were born at exactly 35 wks and never had to be in NICU and were never on oxygen either. They weighed 4.14 and 4.3 at birth. I was worried about that before I delivered but everything worked out great!!! Good Luck!

The girls were born at 35 and 3 and came right home with us. I also had the steroid shots at 30 weeks, which I truly think made the difference. They were 5 and 5.5 lbs. Tiny, but perfect!

Mine were born at 35 weeks + 6 days. They were 5 lbs 1 oz and 6 lbs 7 oz. My little one was discharged after 3 days but the larger one had fluid in his lungs and stayed for 7 days. The hospital allowed us all to stay in a room for the entire week even though I and one baby had been discharged.

My high risk docotr is telling me that anytime after 34 weeks there is only a slim chance that they will need to be in the NICU. Good luck! Bed rest is miserable, I am 24 weeks and was just put on, although I feel fine enough to work. Why the hospital stay?

It really depends. When my two were in the NICU we saw 40w 8 lb babies in the NICU. So you really never know. It just depends on how they are doing.

I was almost 35 weeks and they stayed 11 days in the NICU as grower/feeders. I am actually glad because each of my twins had 2 apnea/bradycardia spells. Plus when we left we were on a 3 hour feeding schedule. My best friend had twins at 38 weeks and they had to stay in the NICU for 5 days so I think after 35 weeks it depends on your babies and how well they are doing. Good Luck, you're almost there!!!

My girls were born at 35w 1d and both went to the NICU for issues with blood sugar levels for 12 hours. Then one was discharged and the other had to stay for 10 days as a grower/feeder.
