DD spat up after a feeding early this morning. Later, when it was light, I took a look at the "damage" on the sleep sack - and found lots of specks of dark brown mixed in with the spit up.

Could this be from bleeding in the stomach? I'm especially concerned because she had some bloody stools several months ago. (Tbey suspected milk protein allergy, had me eliminate dairy from my diet and give her Nutramigen whenever she gets formula; later, a specialist told me it could be any number of things, and I could try eating dairy again and see what happened; I've been eating dairy for a couple months, and DD has seemed absolutely fine. No more bloody poops, no unusual fussiness or gas or anything.)

Of course I'll ask the pedi about it today, just wanted to run it by y'all too, since they don't open for a while yet...

are you breastfeeding? Could the blood be from your nipples?

I don't have any advice, sorry, other than to call your pedi and see what they say about it. Did he bite her tongue and lip maybe?

Is she on meds for the spit up? Could be that the spit up has caused damage to her esophagus? Let us know what the ped says. :hug99:

I am BFing, but don't have any nipple cracks/soreness, and when I pumped last night it was clean...

No teeth yet (thank goodness! not looking forward to that  )

She isn't on meds, and has never had signs of reflux. She doesn't spit up much, just a mouthful occasionally. Last night's big spit was unusual (and probably my bad - I put her back to bed without burping because I just wanted to go back to sleep).

Well, I talked to a nurse at the pedi office, and she said it's probably nothing. If it were something serious, DD would be acting sick (which she isn't, she's quite herself). She said just to keep an eye on her and call later in the day to check in. So, we'll see...

My son has done that. My GI specialist said it was most likely irritation from the esophagus. She did check his blood levels (to rule out internal bleeding) and upped his dose of Prevacid to twice daily (solutab) and it never happened again. We're now weaning him off the Prevacid since he basically stopped spitting up at 8 months (he was a heavy spitter with pain) and she wanted him off at around 9 months.

My son has reflux and at about 8.5 weeks, he did that. Just once, but it really concerned me. I took him to the doctor, with burp cloth in hand to prove I wasn't just a neurotic mom (I think the doc thinks that because I've been so persistent about the reflux...ugh!). Anyway, he suggested the same things PP's have... bleeding in esophagus, bleeding from nipples (not likely), etc. Since Jacob has reflux, I conceded that it was probably bleeding from frequent spitting up, as my nipples were fine. I wish I had more to offer you, but I know how upsetting it can be to discover something like that!

Best of luck... hope that it's just a one-time thing for you, like it was for me. :)
