Worried about Babies' Weights

I went in for my 32 week ultrasound today. Baby A (our girl) weighed 4 lbs 1 oz and Baby B (our boy) weighed 3 lbs 7 oz. Baby B has always measured smaller than A, but now the difference between their weights is getting bigger. At our 28 wk appt, A weighed 2 lbs 9 oz and B weight 2 lbs 4 oz. Should I be worried about this???? Baby B is very active & the u/s tech had a hard time measuring him because he wouldn't sit still (she checked the blood flow in his cord & that took forever because he kept moving & kicking the cord). My OB said we'd monitor them again in 2 wks and he said he wasn't too concerned about it now---but I'm a first-time mommy and I just seem to worry about everything! Oh, and by the way, I've gained 51 lbs so far so my weight gain isn't a problem, just theirs.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I was always told with frats they will grow as they would if they were a singleton. They are each their own baby.

There was a 10 oz difference between my fraternal twins when they did an ultrasound, at one point. When they were born- there was a ounce difference!

I wouldn't really take those TOO seriously. If the doc isn't worried, you shouldn't be either :)

I'm almost 33 weeks and as of my last ultrasound my babies are almost a full pound apart in size. The doctor was concerned about this and I've been monitored by U/S for this every 2 weeks for the last month and a half. They looked at the umbilical cord also, and its the same situation as yours. Everything looks good. So they believe it is most likely just that the babies are different and will grow differently. Plus their movements are great so they are not too concerned, but still monitoring.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as they are moving and growing in general then I think they are fine. My doctor was only concerned about whether mine were growing steadily and they are.

I don't believe there's really any reason to be concerned since they're fraternal. Also, keep in mind that there's no way for them to be completely accurate on the weights of the babies on u/s. I'm sure all is well.

My twins were measuring different weights last time too. I asked my OB and he said no worry at all. They start to monitor more if there is more than a 25% difference. So if you took your Baby B's weight divided by Baby A, you get a 15% difference. That is in the normal range and doesn't even take into account u/s error.

That's not always true. They are their own baby, but they have to share a space.

Mine measured the same, but when they came out they were 6 lbs 1 oz and 4 lbs 8 oz. The larger one had a much larger unbilical cord and the doctor said that sometimes 1 placenta grows and takes up room and the second placenta doesn't grow as much. With me, this was all a surprise since the u/s always measured them almost the same. So it is good that they are keeping an eye on it. I don't think you need to worry - they will watch it!

Your story is just like mine only luckily you are so far along. No matter what it's definitely scary, but I'm sure your doctor is monitoring very closely.

It's not uncommon for them to be different weights. It's when they are 1lb or more and the the weight disparity between them is starting to grow that my specialist was concerned. At 24 weeks we knew there was a problem with IUGR and blood flow through the placenta/umbilical for Baby B and we started a bi-weekly ultrasound monitoring with the Peri-MFM specialist. Everything else was normal, including my and Baby A's weight gain. At this point I was placed on moderate bed rest and I started eating a high protein diet in hopes that even if both me and baby A gained weight that would be fine as long as baby B did too.

At 26wks 4days I was admitted for 24 hour monitoring because of the baby starting to show some reversal of blood flow. We delivered both boys at 28wks 6 days on March 30th. Baby A was fine and had no idea that his brother was having issues until their . Baby A was born at 2lbs 15oz. Baby B was born 1lb 7oz. Both are still in the NICU and will be for another 6 to 8 weeks. They are doing really well too.

Stay positive, calm and proactive. Do your research on IUGR problems, ask your doctor what the next steps will be (i.e. steroid shots, etc.) and try to get ready for your babies so that if you should have to do bed rest you will have accomplished things that you can't do while on bed rest. I would have been disappointed that I couldn't get the nursery ready myself so I'm glad we did early. We didn't even know there were problems then!

    Good luck!

As long as they both keep growing on their own growth curves then there is nothing to worry about. Especially with a wiggly baby, u/s weights will be off. It's not an exact science at all. As long as the babies are growing, it is the gestation that is more important. You can have a 5 lb 33 weeker and a 3 lb 35 weeker and the 35 weeker will be healthier.
