Work from home?

Hi all! I'm wondering how many of you work from home? If so, what do you do? Do any of you do medical transcription? I've heard that can be a pretty good field to do from home. I am trying to look at possibilities for when my twin boys arrive because with the cost of childcare going back to work (outside of the house) is out of reach for me.

Hi there, I dont work from home but I had to prepare my classes at home (I teach English as a Foreign Language to adults). Without help around, it is quite hard to do especially in the first year. If your babies sleep then you can get things done but I would advise not taking on too big a workload at the start until you get into a routine. The first few months are hard plus you will be very tired. If you can get help in then it will be easier. GL & congrats on your twins! :)

Thanks! I'm not due till Oct 16th (they won't let me go past Oct 2nd though), but I wasn't thinking of even starting any kind of work until at least the new year. And that's at the very earliest. Just trying to get an idea so I know what is out there. For the time being I want to finish up the last few classes I have to take towards my Human Services major (which I'll do online, slowly) so some day I can continue in that field. Of course, that is unless I find some type of work from home job that just blows Human Services out of the water by income and of course I have to like it lol

I won't have any help really. My husband deploys every two months, over and over. So when he's around I'll have him at night (which can always change w/ how unpredictable the military is), but other than that, it's really just going to be all on me.

    Thanks again!

You´re welcome! You´re wise not to start work until the new year. Being a mum to twins is such hard work in the beginning especially if they´re your first like mine are. Could your mum maybe go and stay with you for a couple of weeks when they arrive? Im a Brit living in Spain and my mum came out for 2 weeks and helped me. I hope you have some support around you. Sorry, Im not trying to scare you, just help :D

My mom is going to try to come visit for about a week, but that's all she can afford to take off of work. She first has to come up w/ the money to get here. She lives on the mainland of US and we are in Hawaii. I'll have another sister and niece (21 yr old) that will come for another week or two.

Have you thought about doing something like Pampered Chef or Stampin' Up!? That's something you can take with you when you move. I did Stampin' Up! before the boys (when we lived in Japan) and I'm just now having to give it up. I found I had more time to do things when the boys were younger than I do now. There is a search engine called "www.chacha.com" and I did that for a little while. It seems like most work at home jobs you need to shell out money for training and such. I would suggest finishing your degree as soon as possible. I was able to get a lot more done when the boys were between 4 and 7 months then when they became mobile.

I was hired for a work from home job by West at Home (westathome.com) but that is a job that has to be done at night, after the kids are in bed. It is a legit work from home job that pays $6/hour when you are training and then $10 once you are really taking calls. I just didn't want to work all day taking care of kids and then work all night taking calls.

Now I am keeping a little boy part time, between 1 and 3 days a week. This is working a lot better for me b/c I still have several days a week when I am not working. And b/c my DH works shift work there are lots of days that he is off when the little boy is here sdo I have extra help. It doesn't pay $10 an hour but it's worth it!

I am in the legal field and I used to be a court reporter. I often typed transcripts for other reporters up until the babies were born and I have decided that it isn't possible for me to continue to type transcripts at home while caring for my babies. However, I am sure with appropriate planning you could make it work for you. It is very difficult for me to find quiet time to type while I am at home and if I did it, it would require me to do it while my husband is at home and leave us with no alone time. It pays well. I average anywhere from $30 to $50 an hour depending on the type of transcript I am typing. So even if you type for a couple hours a day you can make decent money. Perhaps you can make a connection at the local courthouse and see if any reporters want to hire out their transcripts. Good luck with your decision.

Funny you mention this! I am "working" right now

It was so much easier in the beginning when they slept a lot during the day and werent mobile. Now it is next to impossible! Right now we have a nanny coming to the house and she is here on the day I WFH - but most of the time I need to go into the office - very hard to call in for conference calls with kids screaming in the background. Our house is pretty small and we dont have an office that I can go to that is away from the boys. Plus all I want to do is play with them

Well better get back to work :winking:

my job allows me to work from home as needed. it's pretty much impossible to work with the babies around, though. they need attention and for the first several months they don't entertain themselves or each other for very long. when the boys need to stay home from daycare due to illness and work is busy DH and i make arrangements to both work from home so we can trade off and at least get a little bit done.

i wouldn't count on being able to be productive if you're planning on working from home without any childcare assistance.

i work from home. It is basically a company that is based out of florida (im in texas) and it is just telcomming sort of thing. I am basically just an admin though, setting up meetings, doing reports. But thankfully my BIL is my boss and it allows for alot of flexability so i can work when the girls are napping or have gone down for the evening..

eta: during the day it is pretty hectic tho. If my job weren't flexible it would be pretty tough. They require alot/most of my attention during the day cept maybe the 5 min here and there..
