i guess not everyone remembers but ds had been having tons of issues with eating/reflux. all because neither the doc or the pharmacist told me how/when to give it to him. hes been on prilosec for 2 months almost and was still not eating much. well i was reading about reflux, etc the other night and it said to give it 30minutes before a meal, on an empty stomach. well ive been giving it to him right before, and sometimes in his bottle (he hates the taste of it). so i tried it yesterday and he went from being forced to drink 1-2oz every 3 hours, to 3-4oz every 3 hours. and today was even better! at the last feeding before bed he drank 7oz!!!! im so excited!!! they still wake up every 3-4hours, but im hoping maybe he'll give me 5-6hours with that much bottle in him! woooohooooo!! :yahoo:
Yea! That's great news. I end up giving it just before the bottle most of the time, so you aren't alone. I hope the good eating trend continues for you. My girls are nearly 10 months now. One no longer needs any meds at all and rarely spits up any more. The other still needs the meds, but she hardly ever spits up anymore when we keep her on the meds. Gone are the days of 5+ clothing changes and worrying that nothing was staying in the tummies. It will get better!
Well that is exciting! This should have a positive impact on his mood as well. He won't be in pain and starving all the time. That would make me less cranky. Strange, neither my pharmacist or ped told me to give 30 mins before a bottle either. Christy
That's great news!! I had two refluxers and I didn't know when I should have been giving it so hopefully other moms just starting out will read this. Good Job Erica
hmm. we've been having some bad reflux issues and our ped put our boys on prevacid this week. he didn't say anything about giving it to them on an empty stomach so we've just been giving it to them with their bottles. i wonder if we should change our approach with this medicine, too. if anyone else here is using prevacid and can weigh in on this, i'd appreciate it.
piccologirl, heres the site i got all my info from- http://boards.babycenter.com/bcus11979/messages/3470/1 and heres what it says about prevacid Tips for Dosing Prevacid (does not include Prevacid capsule) When mixing or dissolving, make sure to administer the full dose within 15 minutes or it becomes less effective Make sure to dose on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before eating. These meds need a very acidic environment to activate. Try to dose first thing in the morning and then again later in the afternoon or early evening. Dosing before bed is not recommended because these meds are not as effective overnight as the H2 Receptors. It’s best to administer using only water, apple juice, acidic fruit, etc. so as to not interfere with the effectiveness of the medication. To administer the Prevacid Solutab, you can either hold the tablet in their cheek while it dissolves (just a few seconds) or you can try to dissolve it in 1tsp of water in a non-bulb syringe. We use the Motrin syringe with great success. Target pharmacy also carries a really good non bulb syringe similar to the Motrin. Please note that if you suspect your baby feeling worse while on Prevacid, it may be too hard on their tummy. We have noted a couple of cases where it has caused stomach upset and sleep disturbances. Some babies will start to feel better after the 2 week wait while others will continue to feel bad. If this occurs, it may be time to try Prilosec or an H2 med instead. If using the compounded Prevacid, there have been cases where some have noticed it losing its effectiveness after 2 weeks due to the compounding. If you notice this, it may help to have it refilled every 2 weeks as opposed to once monthly.
My girls have been on Zantac, Prevacid, and Prilosec at different times and we were told that all of them should be given 30 minutes before eating. It didn't always happen that way, but that's the way it is supposed to be given.
I didn't know that either at first. My friend told me about waiting 30 min. It's hard to do sometimes, but I do think it helps. See if you can have the Prilosec flavored. I had it flavored grape and Ellie takes it no problem now. I just put it in a nipple for her to suck down.
thats a good idea about using a nipple! i use the syringe. the first month they gave us unflavored. why the heck would they give me unflavored medicine thats DISGUSTING to give to a 4month old? i asked for flavored next time and we got grape. i dont think its that bad, but he hates it

I've had two different pharmacists (at different pharmacies) tell me that grape bubblegum is the best flavor for masking the bitterness of the Prilosec.
