We started putting our boys on their tummies for naps because they are just gassy babies. Well now they will absolutely not fall asleep on their back. If they do fall asleep they are up within a half hour, pulling their legs up and trying so hard to roll over. They do not roll from their back to their tummy but if they are on their tummy they can roll to thier back. their necks are definitley strong enough to pick their heads up. They sleep so soundly on their bellies. They put themselves to sleep without any help, if they are on their back it takes forever for them to fall asleep and then they are definitly up every 2-3 hours. They will sleep for 6-8 hours on their tummy but it just sucks for me because I check on them pretty much every 10 minutes, I have a bed by their crib. Do I need to be rolling them over, they just wake up, flip them back over they go to sleep. I am totally paranoid though about them sleeping at night like that what should I do? How can I get them back to sleeping on their backs?

What about on their sides in a sleep positioner? Honestly, if they can roll from tummy to back consistently, I think they are fine to sleep on their tummies.

I agree with PP. We started putting our boys down on their sides when they were about 3 months old because their heads were starting to get flat in back. We never used a sleep positioner though. If they can pick up their heads and roll on to their backs if they need to, then I wouldn't worry too much about them sleeping on their tummies. I know, it can be really scary for us moms when they do, but, if they are more comfy, why not? :)

I wish, wish, wish I had put mine to sleep on their tummies. Now it's too late - they just won't do it. They both have flat head due to positional preference and they can get out of their positioners so we have to get up every hour or so during the night to reposition them. Tummy sleeping would make my life so much easier. If you have healthy babies I wouldn't worry (that's just me, though).

if they can roll from tummy to back and pick up their heads then you can put them on their tummies (according to my ped)...my son slept like that for naps from about 2 mos on and at night from 4 mos (naps cuz he'd nap on the couch or floor and I was right there - that was before he could roll well)

DD never caught on to tummy sleeping and was always a bit tougher in the sleep department - around 10 mos or so she caught on to what her brother was talkin' bout!!! (and the funny thing now is he pretty much sleeps on his back or side and DD sleeps on her tummy with her butt in the air!)

We always put ours on their sides with two blankets rolled up next to them. One behind and one in front. I was just too nervous to let them sleep on their tummies that young. It is to much of a risk and after all the work to get them here, why risk it. My Ped wasn't happy about the side sleeping b/c that to is dangerous, but it was the only way they would sleep.

After being in the NICU and the nurses sleeping my boys on their tummies I had a heck of a time sleeping them on their backs. DH put them to sleep on their tummies one night when they were quite young and they slept better than ever. I started sleeping Molly on her tummy by 3 months as well and she slept better. You need to do what is best for you. A sleep positioner on their sides may be helpful to you. Good Luck

My DS is a tummy sleeper and has been since he was 2 months old.

This is the only way he will sleep now without screaming his head off, or while in his car seat in the car.

I would be doing tummytime in the daytime with him and he would always fall asleep as he would constantly spitup while on his back, we (DH and I) finally gave in after 2 months of no sleep and realized that this is the way he wants to sleep.

Your babies can move their heads at this point, so I wouldn't worry about it, GET some sleep yourselves and use your best judgement and don't put stuff in their cribs like stuffed animals and pillows...

All of my kids have slept better on their bellies, so that is where they slept! As long as they can lift up their head an move it from side to side, I say you're good! IMO.

My DS has been a tummy sleeper since he was 3 months, he slept great that way for naps and so I tried nighttime once and since he was in a crib anyway, I let him sleep that way with the monitor on of course, even though he was in our room.

All of mine were much better sleepers once they could sleep on their tummies. As soon as they could roll around a bit & lift their heads, I let them sleep that way. They were happy & I got some sleep, too. Once they can roll themselves over onto their stomach, you will work yourself to death trying to keep them on their back if they don't like it. It made me nervous too, but I stopped fighting it.

Patrick slept the best on his tummy and still does. Are they able to roll a little or move around? If they can, that might be enough to put your mind at ease.
