Will Baby B turn after Baby A is born?

Right now Baby A is head down and Baby B is feet down. I was wondering that if we were able to go for a vaginal birth, once Baby A is born, will (or can) Baby B turn around so he is head down? Or will the docs try to birth him feet first? Thanks!

Sometimes the baby will turn on his/her own, other times the doc can turn the baby. I am hoping baby b turns too for delivery. I really want to avoid a c-section.

It is possible that he can turn, although I do not know the stats. Or your doctor can try to turn him through something called an External Cephalic Version (ECV) I believe.

A lot of doctor's will not attempt a vaginal delivery if Baby B is breech. Mine would not.

It does depend on whether you doc will attempt a breech delivery vaginally on the event that Baby B does not turn, like if they will want to reach in and try to turn them around. My Baby B went transverse the morning my water broke and he went into position when Baby A was delivered they just had to turn on the Pitocin again since my contractions slowed. I would ask at your next appt some docs won't even attempt a vaginal delivery unless both are head down and just are more comfortable performing a C section since you cannot predict whether they will go into position or not and some do not want to chance it, thankfully my doc wanted to do everything to try a vaginal delivery and it worked out fine...I'm sure a breech delivery poses very different circumstances so I would ask and then go from there.

Baby A was vertex and Baby B was butt first. My Dr didn't have a problem giving a vaginal birth a try. Out of 6 OBs, 5 would have tried although I think only 3 felt comfortable. 1 said No way.

I went early due to pre-e and HELLP so at 34w6d, a 4 pound breech baby was no big deal. When A was born, it did take 1.5 more hours for B to emerge. She was loving all the extra room. Baby B was born butt first.

I would talk to all of oyur Obs and see what they're comfortable with. I had no problems and I'm really glad I pushed.

I would definately ask my OB if I were you. I talked to mine last week and he said no way, but if I wanted to talk to the Peri he was fine with that and completely understood. I think if we were in a larger area, or up in the city, he would have given it a try. He told me that chances were good that even if B is breech, chances are she would just "fall out", after A, but he didn't want to give it a chance for legal reasons. I can completely understand that and respect him for being honest with me! I am hoping to avoid a c-section, too and have no problem with the idea of pushing both out... even if one is breech.

I would not get too upset yet about it. My wife was not happy about our baby B being head up. He was the entire pregnancy until the 31st week when he moved. We have other friends who experienced the same thing, except when their B flipped, they knew because it was painful. So just hold tight and maybe B will flip on its own.

Also, we spoke about this with our OB. They were honest in that it depended who was on call. Two of the DRs are experienced and have done a manual flip. THe other two, have not done it and we thought it would be too risky to try. Talk to them... if I learned anything this week it is that you really need to talk to the doctors, and make them take the time to talk to you!

    Good luck!

I went against what my doc wanted to do and went vag-with A head down, B head up. B turned and followed, just like he was supposed to. Same thing happened with a good friend of mine.

It is kind of a toss up. Some babies will turn on their own and sometimes the doctor turns them. When my mom was pregnant with me and my brother, he was head down and I was breech, and the doctor didn't even try to turn me (just pulled me out by my legs). I don't think doctors do that much anymore. My doctor will not deliver me vaginally since baby B is breech (even though she is smaller).

I was in the same situation, Baby A vertex and Baby B breech. We had a vaginal delivery and they pulled him out feet first. There was a moment when they thought they would have to do a C-Section after A was delivered, but they were able to give me some meds to relax my cervix enough to get a hold of him. It's up to you and your dr if you want to risk it. I am glad I did, but it could have turned out differently.

    good luck!

Thanks for your responses. I will definitely talk to my doc about it, but I am not optimistic. The hospital I will be at is very careful about their legal liabilities - we're not allowed video cameras at the birth, we're not allowed a video copy of any ultrasounds, etc. With my son's birth, they were on top of me all day, worrying about his heartrate, wanting to get him out faster, "threatening" me with vacuum or forceps or a C-section.

The good news is there's plenty of time for your Baby B to flip. Mine was breech or transverse up until 33 weeks, since then she's stayed head down. Our OB practice won't attempt vaginal without both being vertex b/c of the risks with the cord coming out first...

My boy flipped between 26 and 30 weeks and never flipped back. He was born feet first by breech extraction 4 minutes after I pushed out his sister in 4 pushes. They were 7lbs11oz and 7lbs10oz and it was easy and smooth. Most qualified doctors prefer to deliver quickly and deliver by breech extraction instead of trying to turn which not always works and puts a lot of stress on the baby.

I delivered my twins vaginally...baby A (Maggie) was head down. Baby B (Sophie) was breech before Maggie was born. The doctor had said she would probably flip once Maggie was out b/c she would have so much more room....she did & we delivered her head down also. Good luck!

My dr wants vaginal delivery. He is breech and she is head down... if she comes first and he is smaller, which he is now, The dr. will either turn him or deliver him breech. She is one of the top doctors in Texas so I trust her.

You need to ask your ob what his/her feeling is about these things. In my case baby A was larger and head down and after she came out baby B who was feet down came 5 minutes later. The dr had to put her hands in and find the baby's shoulders and hold her arms near her so they didn't stretch out or anything and get stuck. It sounds really painful but it wasn't.
