why'd we have to move the doorknob?

Okay, so we moved the girls into toddler beds at 16 months (they turn 3 next month) so they've done really well. They had started a habit of running into our room at night though..

First we just had to shut the door. After about 6 months or so they smarted up and could open it. Okay, out came the safety knob, on the inside.. That held them in for another few months. Well last week 'J' proved that not only can she open the door with the safety knob on, she knows how to 'break' it so it just comes right off! So I locked the door. She opened that too.

Well last night I thought I'd try locking it WITH the safety knob, thinkging that would for sure deter her from coming out... Nope - she had the knob apart and the door unlocked in 2 minutes FLAT! LOL

So today I went and turned the knob around - it locks on the outside now instead of the inside. Wonder how long that will deter her for????

I REFUSE to be outsmarted by a 2 (almost 3) year old! LOL It's not only become a battle of the sleep deprived, but now it's a battle of whits......

We have a baby gate, kind of in the shape of a backwards "L" to keep them confined to their room, and it has worked like a charm! Their bedroom door is the one on the left, and they can't even get to the door handle to open it, and it also keeps them out of their bathroom (the door on the right). Here is a picture.

We put a pressure mounted gate (like this, but not wide) right in their doorway. They could open their bedroom door, but then there was a gate there that kept them from going any further. We had it just in case, but never really needed it because we really stressed staying in your bed. To this day (they are 4) they still call for us rather than get out of bed when they need something. Which is really good because they are getting bunk beds from my parents for Christmas and I won't have to worry much about someone trying to climb out in the middle of the night.

Smart little ones you have there. We had to get the safety knob for our front door because the boys would open it and walk out. Now that we have that on the door they dont go anywhere near it. its been a blessing. Its a pain in the but to open though and some days I would rather break it off then mess around with it.

    Good Luck!

Yep, that's my Gabe. By age 2 he was figuring out every door knob cover we could think of. We finally bought a doorknob with a lock and turned it so that the lock was on the outside. He's so smart with the locks, I was afraid he'd figure out how to get out the doorwall or the front door (chain lock and all) and he was getting up really early in the morning and getting into things like scissors and I just wasn't comfortable with that. We just recently in the last month or two have stopped locking it and he's been doing a good job. But, it was locked for a almost 2 years from the outside like that. It's scary to think of what they can do or get into when you're sleeping.

My goodness! What a smart little cookie you have there. We haven't dealt with this, but it sounds like your most recent move should have her stumped for at least a little while! :)

I hear ya! We went through the same things with my boys. Nothing worked. I have the safety knob on the inside of their door along with at least 50 smallish pieces of packing tape hodge-podged all over it. He has tried picking the tape off, but can't find the ends, and if he does, it doesn't go anywhere. We're going on about 6 months now, so I consider it a small success!
