Why is it that unless you pick a very common name or their name some people look at you like you are an alien when you tell them the names you like for your baby!!???? My twins have told some people the name we are going with for this baby and we have gotten a lot of alien looks!! We are using Easton Asher. I love Asher but dh NOR any of our IRL friends or family are crazy about it. DH came up with Easton and it is the only normal name he has come up with so I jumped on it. People have been acting like we are naming him frog boy or something weird!! We should not have told the girls I guess but I did not think about them telling!!! Why do people act like that??!!

I know! My now ex grandmother in law made a very racist comment about the twins names. I think mostly geared toward jazzlyn. I love Easton as it reminds me of the country singer. I like asher too but can't get the Laurell k Hamilton character out of my head

People just always have to have something to say. It's your baby, name him whatever you want! Even my perfectly normal named twins get looks sometimes because of the boy twins that were on Full House, which nobody told me about until AFTER I named my twins.

I felt horrible when I first met a friend of mine and she told me her daughter's name is Kamdyn, I automatically said something about how the town I grew up in was Camden. She thought the name was very unique and that no one had heard it before.. I still feel bad for bursting her bubble. :(

I got flack for my twins names. People told me that they were girl names .. ummmm .. Jesse and Jayden don't sound like girl names to me !
Name him whatever you want !!

    Why?
    Who knows!
Here people seem obsessed with asking us what Drexel means. Even after we say it was my grandfather's name they are like, yeah, but what does it mean?
I've started asking them what their name means. The vast majority do not know, or they say something, like, It's a Saint's name, or it was my father's name--well yeah, so I just told you Drex was my grandfather's name--same difference!
But on the other hand, I usually fail at restraining myself from saying something when someone tells me their son's name is Junior or Elder--both frightenly common baby names in southern Mexico right now.

    I LOVE the name Easton!!!!

after getting slack for "Seth" (i was told it sounded like a lisp) i told people i was naming the twins "Pony Boy” and “Soda Pop” after the characters in The Outsiders… as straight faced as I could

… people knew I was joking when I said I was naming them Trouble and Danger… so I had to come up w/ real odd names…

    I love Seth too.

I know 4 kids names Asher and a girl named Asha and like that name and don't think it's strange. It's not an unusual name IMO. I think it is actually becoming more and more popular. I wonder if Easton is what's getting the look more than Asher. (I don't know anyone named Easton and don't think it's a common name) To me, when I hear Easton Asher together I hear "Easter."

Asher is from the Old Testament. I wouldn't call it unusual. Uncommon, sure, but I like that it's strong and has history. As far as Easton, it's by far the most "normal" sounding "different" name I've heard. Gotta be honest, but names like "Awesome" drive me nuts. Easton to me is along the same lines as "Landon".

My mom said that by naming my son "Sebastian" he'd be called "Se-ba*tered" on the playground. REALLY, Mom?

Then when people did ask about the names I'd say Orion and you can just hear the air go out of the room. Yes, it's unusual. I live with a picky DH. He gave me the choice of Orion or Icarrus. I picked the non-Icky name. We named him Orion Michael so that if he does want a vanilla name he can go by his middle name.

It's so annoying when people butt in- this is your baby and you name it whatever you want! (But not Adolf Hitler or Pheobo, please!)

No matter WHAT name you choose someone will have an opinion. I got flak for all 3 of my boys names, but the most flak for Nathaniel. Apperenly people had never heard the name....really?! I was told that Donevan was a "black" name. THat comment really bothers me. Donevan is actually an old Irish name, but whatever, and who really cares what races uses the name more. Asher is a great name, and all that counts is that you and your DH like it. Everyone else's opinions dont hold a grain of salt.

We will not tell anyone the baby's name until after he or she is born. EVERYONE has an opinion. You could name the baby Robert after your grandfather Robert and your grandfather will say something about it. So, we keep the names close held until we see the baby. I like Easton and I like Asher. My twins have an Asher in their daycare class, he is a sweet kid.

Thanks to all of you!! I ran out of points but will give you all one when I can!

I have started acting like his name is not 100% for sure and telling those that ask if we have a name that we are still thinking. Which is true, we are still thinking, just not about his name LOL!!! I have family members and friends who have named their kids AWFUL names IMO but I would never ever put their name down ( the worst I have said is that is not my style but if you like it go for it!) we are also dealing with the sad faces of people who wish we would name him after family members we are doing that on purpose so that no one gets their feelings hurt - it seems like we can't win for loosing!!! My family is divided and in a huge family feud with ME in the middle ( if they lived near each other there would be killings, that is how bad it is) So it is best to stay away from that!!!!

My middle son's hockey coach just named his third son Easton! I LOVE IT!!! Perfect hockey name BTW. His older brother's names are Bauer and Cooper. Do you see a theme? :) I think it's great.
I like Asher too. It's a great Bible name.
I got looks about Jesse's name. And to this day get frustrated over it, but mainly over the mispellings (people including family spelling it Jessie-that's a girl).
The thing about being the parent is YOU get to choose it, no one else. Tee Hee. Don't try to please everyone else, go with what you love. That's what matters...

I have read at least 3 novels in the last 6 months with a character named Finn--definitely not "out there," but still not common. That's what I like in a name.

Thanks, it does seem like for as many negative comments we get about Finn, we get good ones too :)

I have only ever seen it spelt Jesse and Jessie.

EMOM Jesse is totally NOT a girls name.

After 3 kids with popular mainstream names that I never really got flack about (except for a couple of comments how shortened two of them are very similar Ollie and Ellie), I named the baby Hermione (well it is her middle name, her first name is Lillian, but we decided to call her by her middle name).
There is no end to the making fun of her name, poor child (and it is an actual old name of greek origin which means queen and messenger). I still love the name and could not imagine another name fitting her better, yet nobody can pronounce it here in Spain and in England people are like "Harry Potter fan, huh?" and "she won't be able to spell that until she is in college" and "poor child, did you hate her when she was born?" . Oh well, I like it and I hope she grows up to like it... unless she is teased mercilessly, in which case she still has Lillian to fall back on.
