Why bother going to the OB....

I went to the OB today for my regularly scheduled appt.... everything is measuring right on (femur, tummy, head), except the grams (her machine measures in grams and peri's in pounds....I came home to figure out what the grams were equal to pound) and what she gets are almost the exact same as my Peri got 2 weeks ago for the baby weights! Obviously they are growing...since they are measuring right on... so how come her measurments are so off? I see the Peri again next week... I do trust his measurements over hers.

But is anybody else having this problem? It's like... why bother going to the OB...if they can't get accurate measurements? How is she gonna know if there is a problem or not?

yeah i am right there with you. i was given the option to stop going to the OB for my ultrasounds and go to the peri instead and that's what i chose.

we had a HUGE scare from the OB sonographer, she measured the babies at a 27% growth discrepancy. we went to the peri 2 days later and got a more accurate measurement of only a 5% difference, not even enough to cause for worry.

so yeah, we only go to the peri for ultrasounds now. the regular OB still for our weekly check ups but i have WAY more faith and trust in the peri than i do the OB.

U/S measurements are not incredibly accurate. And unless the same person is doing it, the same exact way there is going to be discrepancies. All it takes is clicking the marker just a little "off" and the measurements will be different. How do you know that your OB wasn't the one with the accurate results vs. your peri? I don't think its necessary to be overly concerned about it. Now if the OB missed something critical, or vital to the babies health that would be a different story. Try not to worry too much about it. GL!

ITA with this. I wouldn't be so quick to write off the OB.

One or the other doctor may have a more sophisticated ultrasound machine too. Probably the peri has the more sophisticated equipment but not necessarily. So it may not even be an operator problem but an equipment problem.

:good: I agree with what Kyrstyn said.

My OB never did do u/s's on me because I was getting them at the peri's and things can be off.

Also, the doctors are specialists in different things.
    The OB is monitoring YOU.
The peri is monitoring the BABIES.
It really is better to see both.

Ditto...The reason to stick with both is because the Specialist..is just that...he specialize in monitoring detailed things about your babies..The O.B ..will be the one delivering your babies and he/she should have been the one who recommended that you see the specialist for those speciality things and yeah the specialist machines should be better than the O.B. because everyone depends on them to see what they need to see and the O.B takes those notes and use it to his advantage. Although to me the specialist vist is more interesting because he is more detailed to me on whats going on the the babies...the O.B. is just as important because he get lab results that informs me of what is going on and also..he will be delivering my babies I need that bond with him to feel comfortable and have that communication with him.

When it came to the difference between the ob and the peri for me... the ob was more for making sure i was okay and the peri more worked with the babies. Of course my ob checked the babies and all, but it was to overall look at how everything was going with the pregnancy and such where as the peri focused on the babies more.

I don't want to scare you, but honestly my peri's office missed our daughter being stressed out and we lost her 2 days later. Just be aware that you should feel comfortable with what doctor's say, but in the end you still need to be cautious and take in your own gut feeling no matter what. Regardless of Peri or Ob labels, any doctor can make a mistake. I loved our peri much more than my ob and i think i trusted them too much where i assumed that what they said was okay, but like i said they are human so they do make mistakes..... i guess what i am saying is no matter where you go.... go with your gut feelings.

I agree with pp not to write off your ob and what was said about u/s equipment. There are good and bad drs in every field. My ob office has incredible equipment and really great u/s techs that i trust (not to mention great drs). They do send all u/s results to the peri to be go over a second time.

I wouldn't write off the ob either, they are looking for different things. My dd saw her peri every two weeks while pregnant and her ob the opposite weeks. The ob did one u/s the day before her c/s. The weights of the babies were 1 oz off of what they ended up weighing and it was NOT on a level 2 u/s machine...

I definitely enjoy my peri vists more than my OB vists, but I can see why I do both.
