who are these kids?

Seriously, this past week it's been like a whole new world around here. All of a sudden there's fighting over toys, binkies, bottles, shoes, you name it.....they even fight over the doors. Yes, the doors. They'll sit on either side of a door & try to close the other one out and yell at each other.

    AAAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!!

And they've started hitting each other & pinching me. Yikes! Is this just "welcome to the wonderful world of toddlerhood?" What happened to my sweet angels????

The main thing right now that's been the hardest is the fighting over everything. I've limited the binkie usage to sleeping & car rides, since DS will literally cross the room to take a binkie from DD, even if he has one in his mouth. Other than that, I don't know what to do. I'm trying to teach them to share & take turns, but seems like they're too young to understand. They really do play well together....probably I'm exaggerating to say they fight over everything. :) But, they do fight over stuff. Like I was trying to explain to my sister tonight, it's like they're having to learn to share a lot sooner than a lot of kids......and 100% of the time.

So what do you do, to help them learn to share at this age? Is it a lost cause & only time will help? Or is there something I should be doing?

It's frustrating isn't it? And I think it takes a loooong time. patience and a deep breath. Mine have gotten better but we still have those serious melt down fights over toys here and there. But I have worked really hard on the sharing issue and taking turns. Phoebe willingly handed over a wanted object to Archer the other day saying "Your turn!" I almost fell over. Hopefully this will occur more often I just need to stay consistent on it. If they won't share the desired object it goes bye-bye.

It becomes better with maturity and understanding of what taking turns is. So it will take time and patience! Deep breath Mama!!

That is a very frustrating stage. I posted a similar question about a year ago when in started in our house. After going to a playdate with some other kids their age, I started working on taking turns. I don't know that it sunk in until recently, but I just tried to stay consistent. They are very good at taking turns now, for the most part. If there is an over-the-top fight over something, I put it away for awhile.

OMG, I swear I could have posted your thread word for word!! Mine are at the exact same stage, and from the other posters, it seems like it is going to last for a while! DS used to be such a little bullie, but now DD has started standing up for herself and the fights have begun. I even asked the pedi yesterday at their well baby visit about this and his suggestion was to just try to seperate and distract,a dn don't constantly use "no" all the time because they can become desensitized to it. It is so frustrating that they just can't "get it" right now, they are just too young. But we keep with the "no, we don't hit/bite/take toys away" thing, so hopefully it will eventually sink in.

But you're right, they are having to learn to share at such a younger age than others. If I rememebr correctly from my human growth and development classes kids don't actually learn to play together until about 3 years, up until them they play along side of each other, and with what ever interests them, even if someone else is playing with it at the time!

We'll just have to hang in there, sounds like the fun has just started!! Just one of the bonuses of having twins I guess!!

 That's exactly what's happened here, too! DD had some delays in crawling & she just last week started to crawl & it seems like it's given her a big boost of confidence. Oh, boy.

thanks for the tip on not using "no" too much.....I think that was part of it.

Weird, my DD had some delays in crawling, didn't start until she was about 10.5 months old, and DS was crawling right at 6 months. We were beginning to think that she might be one of those no crawler babies, but one evening she just got up on all fours and started scooting. I am thinking they will have the same difference in walking also.

    Good luck with the battles!!!
