White noise machines? Fact or fiction?

Our twin girls are 7 weeks old and have been sleeping in our family room since coming home. I am tired of our house looking like a daycare, so we are getting ready to move them into their room (they will share). My concern is there is a bathroom that separates the twins room from our 23mth old son's room. Since the girls dont' sleep through the night and William has been sleeping from 7pm to 6am since he was 4mths, I am petrified they are going to wake him with their night feeds/cries. He is inconsolable when awoken from a deep sleep - the whole house will be in chaos. We are trying to figure out how to insulate him (somewhat ; he is going to have to get used to it) - do white noise machines actually work? Anyone with any experience or other suggestions, please let me know!

Yes! They will help block out noise. Put one in his room.

Fact for sure!! Homedics Sound Spa. We have this in the boys room and my DD's room. They all sleep better and longer in the morning now that they have them. You can get it at Bed Bath and Beyond. :good:

Definite fact. We have used music and fans as well and those have helped immensely. Good luck!

Yes! We all have fans in our rooms. Well - in the boys' room we have an air purifier, but we keep it on the higher fan setting. Works awesome.

LOVE THEM!!! MY 2 year old use one every time they sleep. And they are the best sleepers I have had. Walmart has some, Bed, Bath and Beyond has some, Radio shack has some.

    Good luck!!!

I say fact, too - we used one for a few months when DS was having trouble sleeping and we had a lot of house guests and creaky stairs (love these old houses) and it worked wonders. I still use it when we travel! I got a cheap one from BRU with a lot of settings - they loved the ocean waves :)

Fact. The best gift we have gotten. Now we run the humidifier in their room each night which is enough white noise itself, but I still take the noise machine when we travel.

I just play a classical music CD or leave the radio on a classical station. They went from sleeping 10hrs a night to 12! It's great!

It works so well, I can even vacuum while they sleep!

Girls, I read all your post at night ( while pumping ) and was so impressed that I ordered that machine. Do you turin it on for whole night? or just couple of minutes while babies falling asleep?

We use it all night long. They turn in off in the morning when they get up. :)

Not only to they work on the babes but DH as well! We have it on ocean waves and then it comes thru the monitor, DH can't sleep without it! I also can vacuum with it on!

One other benefit that we've noticed is that it helps when we travel. We bring the noise machine with us and it's another "cue" to the babies that it's time to sleep. Seems to really work for our guys!

Yes, they work. Just one caution: it's easy to become dependent on them.

In college, DH always slept with a fan on in his dorm room so he could sleep while other people were still up partying. We've been out of college 20 years now, and we've slept with a fan on in our bedroom every night ever since! We switched to a white noise machine this year because it is portable, because when we stay at a hotel or a relative's home, we can't get to sleep without some kind of white noise anymore. Total quiet is "too" quiet to sleep now.

Definitely fact, these machines work wonders with babies, as for your toddler, he might sleep through the crying, our older boys' rooms are across the landing from ours and all the doors are opened, they never get woken up by the babies at night[IMG]

We love them, but we are ALL completely dependant on them, too. I dread the day a thunderstorm or something kills the power around here because only two of my machines take batteries, and only one has actually ever worked on battery power. Once, when the power went out I put the battery operated one in the hall on the loudest setting so we could all benefit :). The moral of the story: Make sure you get one with a battery backup. We leave ours on all night.
