I just posted re: nursery monitors; now I'm wondering about white noise machines to help babies sleep. Have you found them effective, and - do they interfere with the monitors?

Many thanks (i'm trying not to be freaked out by all these first year posts of what we have to look forward to! I'll be THRILLED to have my babies here, but - yikes!)

I use one for my babies. I got one by Homedics at Kohl's for about $25.00 and I can't live without it. The waterfall sound sounds like white noise and we use rain a lot too. If you want to try it first before you buy one, you can always put a radio on AM between two stations--- it's the same thing.

    Good luck,
    Crystal

We have our twins in separate bedrooms and use a white noise machine in both their rooms. In my DD's room we use a heater, but just turn it to the fan setting, so there is just noise, in DS's room we use a white noise machine that we bought from Bed Bath and Beyond by Homemedics for $19.99, it has 6 different settings you can use.

We like to use them that way if one of them wakes in the middle of the night the other one does not. [IMG]

Oh and no problems with interference with the monitors, I have 2 of them, one for each of their rooms.

we use one from hammacher and schlemmer (sp??) and i could not live with out it. It is small, so it travels easily.... It does not interfere with their monitor, although I do have a video monitor. Our house is small an d we have hardwood floors that creak a LOT, I am so glad we have it b/c i don't have to worry about tiptoeing around the house.

We use an air cleaner as a white noise machine. I like that is serves a dual purpose - keeps the air clean and it's loud enough to block out background noise (has 3 settings to increase or decrease the cleaning power/noise). We bought one at Home Depot for about $125 but there are smaller models - you can find them anywhere and some are much cheaper.

We use a humidifier which serves as two purposes. We don't always put water in it; however, we always use it for white noise when they're sleeping! I would get something . . . I think it helps from waking each other up.

I have a white noise machine, I found it after Xmas one year for like $5 and it is the BEST. We use it each and every nite, and I couldn't live without the thing. So good for calming a fussy newborn, and now it is their 'music'.

If we have colds, the humidifier does the trick too.

I down loaded white noise from iTunes and made a CD and play it in the nursery. There is also a CD available from Harvey Karp with heartbeats, etc. that I got on Amazon.com. I think my babies do a bit better when the CD is playing. I usually put the heartbeat on repeat all night. I was willing to try anything.

We had a hand me down noise machine that we used every night, and one night it quit working. DH and I freaked out and he was ready to jump in the car and run to Walmart to find another, but we got the bright idea to dig our small portable radio out of the camping equipment. We put it on a static station and it worked like a charm. I like that I can put it on music when I am in there cleaning or putting clothes away as well. You will hear it over the monitor, but it won't drown out a baby cry.

    Good luck!

i had one from BRU (cant remember the brand) but it was not very loud. then i got a Homedics one and it is so loud. it made a big difference for my boys. our house is small so it really drowns the noise out
