Shortly after my son was born a small white birth mark appeared on his forehead and then shortly after that another tiny white dot appeared. I'm freaking out that he may have that skin disorder. I go to my pedi in a few weeks, but I'm wondering if anyone else has a child with a white birth mark and everything is fine. TIA!

Victoria also developed a white patch on her skin about a week after she was born. its on her bum. she has an olive skin, courtesy of her Greek Dad so its very visible. My pedi said its jsut a pigmentation abnormality in the skin and not harmful in any way, she still has it, it ahs not grown in size and it doesnt bother her, so I guess its just a white patch. Unless it become scaly or red or something like that I dont think you should worry to much.

Trent has a 1/2" pale spot on his side and our pedi said it was nothing but a little less pigment in that spot. He hasn't developed any more of them and the spot is the same size it was when it was first noticed (I think he was 9 months?) I know it's hard not to worry but a pale spot doesn't necessarily mean anything.

 No advice here, I'm sorry you are worried. I hope your ped. can put your mind at ease!

It sounds like a backwards freckle! (Freckles are clumps of melanin exposed to the sun) What it sounds like is that when your son's skin is getting a bit tanner from being exposed to the sun, the part without melanin isn't changing with the rest of it. :)

And "that skin disorder" is called Vitiligo. :) Figured you'd like to have what to ask the doctor.

one of mine has a giant, brown birthmark on top of his head. it baffled all the docs in two nicus (so fun!) and it has to be checked every 6 months. we also have to keep it out of the sun..... he's growing long hair out of that area, which also makes me nervous, but so far we are told not to worry.

so, when we noticed a white patch on other little one's head when his hair started growing, we were a little nervous. again, they said it was a "nevus" and not to worry about it, but to try to keep it covered and to watch to make sure it doesn't change. it's much less noticable than the other and our pedi says not to worry so we try not to! you'll probably hear the same thing.
