Since reflux seems to be the topic of the day...

My pedi is very vague about how long we will have to do the meds for reflux. She just keeps saying someday they will grow out of it. How much longer is someday? :) For those of you with older refluxers when were you able to stop the medication? And how did you know it was time?

My older DD wasn't able to get off her meds until she was 3. Our pedi said that is unusual though. She said most are by six months, and she rarely sees a baby needing it after a year. We never knew if our DD was ready or not, but would try to wean her every 6 months or so, and after a few days off meds we knew if she was/wasn't ready.

Mine were fine just after they turned 1 yrs old. Not sure how old yours are, but I hope it ends soon for you ! :)

I think every child is different. My doctor said at my son's two month appointment that they usually outgrow it by six months...then at six months said nine....then at nine said one. I would have rather he said "one day" because I was always devastated when "the" month rolled around and my son still wasn't better.
For my ds, he started improving ALOT when he was nine months and began to crawl and pullup. I did keep him on the meds until he was a year, and we haven't looked back since.
I hope your little ones get to feeling better soon without the reflux meds. :hug99:

Emma grew out of it around 9 months, Jake not till 14 months. Basically I knew because #1 they had finally stopped spitting up completely, and #2 after I had weaned them off of the meds they were still eating/drinking fine and didn't seem to be in any pain.

We were off reflux meds by 6 months... but the spitting up continued until over a year (and still happens occasionally), but its not painful for her.

I went to a local twin group meeting and 3/4 of the moms said their kids had reflux and most of them were 2 before they grew out of it. I sunk thinking that my little DD could be miserable like this for that long. Honestly I am suppose to have her taking her meds 4 times a day and I weaned her to once a day and she seems fine. Everyone seems to be different but I would think for us maybe a couple more months and then be done. I will find out more next week at our 9 month appt.
