I have mono/di twins and I am trying to do everything I can to prevent TTTS. The TTTS foundation recommends drinking 3 high protein drinks a day. I'm trying to get this chocolate boost drink down right now and it is gross! Is ensure better? Any other ones I don't know about? It is a lot better when I make a milk shake with ice cream and milk, but I can't do that at work. Any suggestions?

Ensure tastes better than Boost (at least to me), but the best are the protein powder shakes I made myself. I would make shakes with juice, milk, fruit and protein powder in the morning and refrigerate at work. Then I'd hand shake them again right before eating.

I am drinking the boost.. its much much to thick for me to drink plain.. I either do half boost and half milk.. or I make a chocolate shake with it.. add some chocolate icecream and some milk and its yummy.

IMO.. boost is the best tasting.

Vanilla Boost tasted better to me than the chocolate and try to keep it cold, that helped a little too.

Ensure made/makes me want to gag!

I like the chocolate boost. The one with extra protein is a lot thinner than the regular one. I actually liked both though!

I've been drinking the stuff 3X day since 21 weeks. . . I like the Ensure chocolate or strawberry best. I either freeze mine (they will turn a milkshake consistency) or pour it over ice to get it cold as possible. I think I've gotten so used to them that they are okay to me now. Boost wasn't as good to me. Ideally, you are supposed to sip on one for 2 to 3 hours (slowly), but I can't always do that.

    (We have TTTS.)

My boys were diagnosed with TTTS at 18 weeks. I drank Carnation instant breakfast - it tastes good, & has just as much protein as boost.

I also upped the protein I ate in general. I totally attribute that to why the TTTS never progressed. As soon as they were diagnosed, I increased the protein(eggs, steak, chicken, fish...) & had the shakes - they basically stayed the same. Then I stopped working at 30 weeks & because I was out of routine - stopped drinking the shakes 3X a day - I felt (foolishly) that I was in the clear and it wasn't doing anything anyways. A week after I stopped drinking them, the TTTS started progressing again - Baby A wasn't growing and had reverse flow in his cord. I ended up having to be induced at 33 weeks 6 days - after going to the hospital (an hour away) every day for about a week and a half for monitering/ultrasounds.

Moral of the story is - drink them no matter how "safe" you may feel (or start to feel)!!!

I liked Ensure's homemade vanilla shakes. I had to drink them with plenty of ice though.

I feel your pain. After drinking 3 of them a day for 21 weeks, I can say I never want to see Boost again.

But, I drank COLD Boost High Protein (15g of protein) in Chocolate. I sipped it slowly between meals. I guess I just got used to it.

    Good luck!

It looks like a lot of differing opinions. I guess it depends on what you like. I found most of them to be too sweet and thick. Ensure was the thickest/sweetest so of the bigger brands I like the Boost best. I can't have chocolate so I stick with vanilla. Even vanilla Ensure is better (less sweet) than the fruity flavors.

However, I like the Safeway store brand the best of all of them. I drink the vanilla ones and they are 1/2 the price of Boost. They are not as thick nor as sweet and they have a high protein option.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm having no problem drinking them slowly because I can only manage to take one sip about every 10 to 15 min! I think I might try making my own shakes and bringing them to work.

I liked the vanilla Boost better than the chocolate. The vanilla Ensure's taste better in my opinion, but are a little lower in protein, I think.

I have a confession  ....I still drink them on occasion! If the girls have me running and I need something to eat...they definitely work in a pinch! I get really hypoglycemic if I don't get a 'good' snack in with some protein in it!

I could only get down chocolate Ensures.
I hope never to drink another again.

I didn't have TTTS obviously :p but I read the "multiples bible" and was concerned about PTL plus I wanted big, healthy babies. I drank chocloate Slim Fast shakes as snacks during the day - 1 mid morning and 1 mid afternoon. It has the same amount of protein as a regular boost/ensure. I also ate trail mix & nuts like crazy.

    Good luck and congrats!

I use a protien powder in the blender with some berries, a banana and some soy milk or milk or orange juice. Each scoop of my protein powder has 30grams of protein. I order the protein on line. The name of it is American Whey. They have many different flavors. I use the vanilla b/c it is versatile. The shakes taste like a smoothy! I hope this helps.

The ENSURE drinks are pretty good - I used to drink the Vanilla and Strawberry flavors. Give those a try - just be sure the label reads Protein.

I couldn't get the canned protein shakes down so I found a protein powder at my local health food store called Spiru-Tein that I've been using. You mix it with 8 oz. of milk per scoop of protein and that gives me about 22 grams of protein per serving. I found 3 flavors I have liked: strawberry, peaches n' cream, and banana.

You can buy it pretty cheap online (compared to my local store) from www.vitaminshoppe.com HTH!!

I drink protien shakes regularly due to a prior surgery. I am very picky and after a long trial and error period I found Champion Pure Whey Stack in chocolate to be the best. One scoop has about 30 grams of protein. I mix mine in the blender with 1/2 cup skim milk and ice. It is very easy to drink with no after taste. My DH drinks it from a shaker cup without the ice and it has a chocolate milk consistency. I like the ice for more of a "shake" texture.

The Vitamin Shoppe used to carry it, but stopped here in Michigan. You can find it online and the website I order from www.vitalady.com sells it in 2 & 5 lb. jugs. They also sell samples, so you can taste it before you commit to buying a large jug.

Try going to Whole Foods and getting their Whey Protein Powder... I liked the Chocolate, but you just mix it w/ milk & it doesn't have all those chemicals you can't pronounce on the can either...

Excellent idea. I didn't think to look at Whole Foods. I have one on my way to work, so I'll be stopping there tomorrow! Thanks!

I got the whey protein powder too. I usually mixed it with ice cream shakes (a big chocolate one before bed every night), but you could mix it with milk too.

The one thing you shouldn't do is mix it with anything hot. I tried it with oatmeal once and nearly tossed my cookies.

I also ate a lot of protein bars. I tried not to eat too many energy bars or the kinds with a zillion vitamins in them, because I didn't want to get too many of the wrong kind of vitamins, but most Whole Foods-type places will have bars that are just soy protein.

I am actually drinking my protein shake powder from Curves....I figured...well, I have it, I might as well go ahead and use it. Once that is gone I have no idea what I will use...but the ice cream shakes sound yummy :icon_biggrin:

I'm late in responding, but one thing I did was to mix the Ensure (which I liked better) with some instant decaf coffee to make a kind of iced mocha. It was pretty good! Don't forget, you can get almost the same amount of protein from eating a Luna or other protein bar; South Beach makes high protein ones. They are definately tasty! HTH

I also wanted to suggest the protein bars.. special K makes a delicious bar in several flavors.. all with 10 or more grams of protein per bar.. yummy

I ended up getting chocolate whey protein from the supermarket. I mixed it with milk and it is much better than boost. Can't be compared to chocolate milk, but at least I can stomach this. Plus, only one scoop has 25g of protein! Thanks for the suggestions.

I have protein powder that I bought at Whole Foods .... some vanilla, and chocolate. It was a whey based protein, and it was around 28g per serving.
It's delicious, and tastes like the frozen drinks at starbucks!!

If you have a Vitamin Shoppe near you they sell something called Bodytech Protein Pudding that is in individual packets in a box of 15, I think. They sell it in chocolate and vanilla flavors and it is amazing!!!! It had 25g of protein and it actually tastes like a dessert treat! You just add the contents of the packet to some ice cold water and shake it or blend it and let it sit about 2 minutes and it had a pudding like consistency. I eat it about 2-3 times a day as a meal replacement b/c my stomach can't handle too much real food anymore due to volume issues and heartburn!!! The vanilla is awesome if you add some cinnamon to it as well!

That is funny you just mentioned this becasue I am sitting here eating pudding i made with the protein powder. I made regular pudding (sugar free) and just added two scoops of powder since I was using two cups of milk. It is much better than those nasty boost drinks.
