Which bed rail do you use on toddler beds?

Our cribs convert into a toddler bed, however we bought 2 bed rails today - Safety 1st. Well we put Kaylee in the bed and noticed when she would lean on it the entire matress would lift up. I guess our matress' are not heavy enough for these. So what do you use? My DH said that he would make something (like a piece of wood that is finished) and either c-clamp it to the bed or screw it in, but I don't want screw holes in the cribs.

I'm not to the point of using toddler beds yet but I do know our cribs convert to one and they have a rail included. It is a finished piece of wood.

Please do not use regular bed rails on a crib! As you found out, the mattress/child is not heavy enough to hold it down and it could cause your child to be more injured then falling on the floor itself. Unless your crib comes with a rail to convert to a toddler bed, it is not recommended to use another type of rail at all. I would suggest a toddler bed itself that comes with side rails. You can use your crib mattress and get a new one for $50 or so or used on craigslist for much less!

We use a Simplicity rail. It clamps down on the mattress. Connor climbs over it on his stomach feet first when he's ready to get out. He weighs 30 lbs and he's never tipped the mattress. He has pulled the rail off, though, but that's not a huge deal.

Well I am taking back the rails that we bought. So don't think I am going to use them. I just don't understand if they convert why they don't include everything that you need. KWIM So my next question is for those who have converted your kids do you all use rails? If not how many times do your kids fall out? Do you think I am out of my mind having DH make something that is finished so that they won't fall out? I may even see if he can put some paddy on the inside so it is not so hard.

    Option #2
There cribs also convert into a twin bed, but we have to buy new matress' would it be smarter to go from a crib to a toddler bed, or has anyone went right to the twin bed and used the rails (safty 1st)

Hi again. I would see if you can find some toddler beds. I still do not think its good to create something to attach to a crib that does not come with it for safety. As I said, toddler beds are cheap and cheaper used on craigslist or at consigment shops. You can still use the crib mattress too and they are much close to floor.

We went right from cribs to twin beds. We also never had rails. The boys each rolled out 2 times within the first 2 nights and never fell out again. Many people have found that twin beds are more comfortable for the kids than toddler beds, and the kids sleep better in them.

I am dealing with the same issue. Our cribs convert to toddler beds but they do not have a rail. Our girls have slept in it for three nights and almost everytime we go in their room, Grace is sleeping on the floor. I have heard her fall out twice, but not sure if she just climbed out the other times or if she is getting out and sleeping on the floor. Elizabeth has only fallen out once. I think we are going to give until this weekend. If they are still falling out by the weekend, I am probably going to buy toddler beds with rails.

We only bought the rail for Connor because he kept falling out. He's just a wild sleeper... he flops all over the place and would roll right out. Heather moves some in the night but she seems to know where the edge of the bed is. She has never fallen out. Have you tried them without the rails to see if they will stay in on their own?

No rails. They've rolled out a few times, but the bed is so low to the ground that they didn't even wake up.
Try either a pool noodle or rolled towels under the fitted sheet. Unless you kids are wild sleepers, this should keep them.
I don't recommend a piece of wood with C clamp. We have those from Ikea, but they just ended up being toys/weapons during naptime crazies. It was quite easy for them to take the rail off.

I use regular toddler beds and this is what I did:

I put one against the wall and the other next to it. On the side thats open I use the adjustable safety first rail. I never had a problem with it lifting the mattress, and it stays in place. The boys can probably lift it up since the mattress is so light, but they dont try. The toddler beds came with built in wood rails and thet separates the actual beds even though they are next to each other.

I am getting twin beds, and I will put them together with 2 rails on each side. I think once they are about 3-4 they stop falling out of bed and have a better idea about space ratios. Good luck with it!
