Where did you get your not-too-expensive twin beds?

We are going to get the girls beds for their third birthday in April and are starting to look around. I cannot believe how expensive a simple twin bed is!!! And most of them are just a headboard and you have to buy a footboard and rails, slats, etc. seperately!!!

So for those of you who DID NOT spend a fortune on beds, where did you get them? And what kind of mattresses did you get? I've learned that with slats you don't need a box spring, but it seems like the rail and slat packages cost as much as a box spring and with a mattress/box spring package they usually throw in the metal frame, right??

Yikes, I didn't know this was going to be so difficult!!

    Thanks ladies!!

Ikea or Big Lots. I bought our mattresses at Big Lots, they were pretty inexpensive. They aren't the best, but they will last for quite a while. Ikea has good prices on beds, not sure if there is one near you. You can order them online too. Good luck!

Also, sign up for your local freecycle. You would be shocked at what people are giving away, and you can post a wanted. Oh, also check on Craigslist...

I got ours at BJ's, they are twins that can be bunked or individual. I got the matresses there too! The only down side was I had to put them together myself but I absolutely love how they look and they have held up perfectly (so far anyway, 2 1/2 years).

I was also going to suggest Sam's Club or BJ's. [IMG]

We got ours at IKEA. They are nice light wood, very plain, and can bunk later.

Remember, you don't NEED a headboard/footboard. All you really need is the metal rectangular frame to put the box spring and mattress on. That's all DH and I have, and that's what we had for our older son, too (until he got a loft bed). The only reason we bought actual beds for Hayden and Brady was because we'll need bunks later for space.

We bought our twin-size mattresses at Leath. We bought the most economical ones that also felt comfortable.

FOr the twins we got VERY lucky, a friend of the family was house cleaning and had a set of bunkbeds(twins). I grew up with there twins and they wanted us to have them free. TAKEN! About as fast as my hands could move them.
For Sarah we looked all over every local place we have. That was 5 years ago and even then they were expensive. It cost us $300 for a cheapy mattress/boxspring, and decent frame and headboard/footboard. Pine wood.

Beds are insanely priced unless you hook a decent sale.

Ikea is where we got the twins bunk beds, and then when we recently split them into two rooms, we got Aryn a bed at Ikea too and left Adrian with the bunks[IMG]

I got really lucky and caught a good sale at JCPenney.com. The beds are really pretty white iron and I got them for $98 each with free shipping!!! As far as mattresses, we have a mattress store here in town that has inexpensive sets. Good luck!! It's a hard decision!!

Big lots is good. You can get bunkbeds that come apart there and use them as two separate beds. (We did this with my older two) The bunkie boards there are only $30 or so. At least they were when we bought them.

We had a similiar issue but because of lack of space we needed a daybed or bunkbed for our girls. Daybed prices are insane for wood ones. (My kids really do a number on metal beds lol) and you still had to pay for the mattress support and the trundle and all. It was just too much. Instead we got a bunkbed with a futon on the bottom. We moved my oldest daughter onto the top bunk and the twins on the futon. That way my son could have his own room. When we move we'll have to get separate twin beds.

Do you have an American Furniture Warehouse? They have some decent priced twin beds there. (We got our new bunkbed there and my new couch lol)

IKEA. I bought the Hemnes bunk beds in antique pine, and they are being used at seperate twin beds right now. $299 for the set. We also bought the firm foam mattresses from IKEA at $79 each (I think). And no boz springs right now because I wanted to keep it low to the floor. I like their mattresses better then my own fancy Serta! lol

We got Megan and Sara's beds at IKEA. They are great. They are the extendable beds. SO right now we have them at a shorter length(their bedroom is rather small), but when we move we will put them at the regular twin size length. We got the mattresses from IKEA as well, so it wasn't that bad in price. We also like them because they aren't so high off the floor, so we don't have to worry about broken bones [IMG]

We bought exactly what PP Christine did above and for all the same reason, but in white. N.B.: if you buy beds that you need to assemble, factor that into the transition from the cribs to beds. Also, if possible, try to have help around when you do it in order to keep the kids distracted when necessary.

We moved Ben and Eve into big beds while my ILs were here at the end of the year and we did it over a three-day weekend. Both of those factors aided in smoothing out what can be a rough transition.

    Good luck!
