Where are the kid clothes?

    A rant.

Remember when we were young and kids clothes looked like, well, kids clothes? We had teddy bears and hearts on our shirts and our outfits were something that a 20 year old wouldn't be seen dead wearing?

Now, I can buy my daughters and I the same leopard print swing cape to cover our embelished satin top and skinny, detailed jeggings! Shoot, we can even have matching pumps! Or, I can make my toddler talk with a statement tee - "Daddy's little cutie," or "I'm a princess." UGH! Maybe I'm being prudish, but SERIOUSLY! Where are the "girls" clothes?

    Where do you shop?

That drives me nuts, too! I like Carter's for toddler clothes. They're cute and sturdy and look like kids' clothes not mini Britney Spears outfits. The Gymboree Outlet is fun too, though even with the discount it's a little much for me to buy too many things there in duplicate for my girlies.

I know what you mean. I shop primarily on discount/clearance/resale, & would really like to find a couple of sailor suits. I'd even buy them new, at this point. When is the last time you saw a toddler in a classic-baby sailor suit? I don't mind some trendy babywear, but I really like classic stuff, too. This last summer I found that Carter's makes the onesie outfits with little shorts. Some of the designs were more grown up- what my boys are wearing in my avi- one says Most Eligible Bachelor but the other was a picture of a dog. My boys would both ask to wear the puppy outfit. ;)

Gymboree is good- I found some unbeatable deals at their Outlet on Memorial Day.

    MY :grr: PET :grr: PEEVE!!!!

I had a post about this last fall also. I find cute stuff for little girls at Gymboree, Carter's, and Osh Kosh. The other stores...Gap, Old Navy, JC Penney, Target...have limited cutesy little girl stuff, but there is some. My girls are in size 6 now and the options out there disgust me.

Yeah, it is hard. Half of the boys clothes say things like "here comes trouble" or "mommy's little monster". Seriously?? And lots of the clothes have things like a skull and crossbones on them. I don't like putting my kids in stuff like that!

We don't have a Gymboree store or outlet here, but I do find cute things at Kohl's, SOMETIMES at Target, and I can get Carter's stuff here pretty easily, too.

I admit, I am in LOVE  with Gymboree's Pups and Kisses collection (cute designs with yorkies and buttons in great fall colors), but Gymboree is hit and miss for me. I wondered if there was anything else out there that I was missing. We've also done OshKosh and Carters, but I don't really love anything there right now either.

The skull and cross bones stuff makes me laugh. Who looks at their baby and thinks, "Oh, gothic cutie!"

I love the skull and crossbones stuff! Jack is all rock and roll, skulls, and pirate gear. I do hate the hoochie girls clothes though.

Carters was my favorite place to shop. I also like Crazy 8's (Gymboree's version of Old Navy).

I agree 100%. Of course, I'd like to find less girly girl clothes. I tend to buy a lot of Halloween clothes because those are the items I like best. I love the skulls, and rock and roll, and my two fight over skull stuff. Alice isn't so much a kitten and hearts kind of girl. . .

We have lots of skull and cross bones (Jolly Rogers as far as my boys are concerned) stuff. Pirates, arrr, and walk the plank are popular topics in our house. My 7 year old has a really cute teal and white striped skull and cross bones hoodie from Old Navy.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to offend anyone with the skull and crossbones thing, so I hope no one took it that way. If my kids WANT to wear it when they are old enough to choose their own clothes, that is fine. It just doesn't feel right to me to pick it for my toddlers - I guess I prefer more "traditional" little boy stuff, like the OP was saying. I'm sure the area each of us live in has an impact on that as well - I live in a very conservative, rural community. Maybe if I lived somewhere else it wouldn't feel out of place for me to choose those things.

I think Target has some great stuff plus Old Navy just got in some really cute girly stuff. Flowery dresses, fun printed tops, cable knit tights, denim jumpers etc.

OMG I could have written this same post! I have a 9 year old daughter and have had this same complaint sense she was born! It gets harder the older they get. I have issues with onsies for boys that say things like hey your wifes checking me out or don't you wish your mom was hot like mine. gets on my nerves. I love Target and Carters and Old Navy. Old Navy carries some of the more "trendy" things but they also have some great basics. Wyatt Grayson could LIVE in his Old Navy sweats and matching zipper hoody. I also love Old Navy's what I call nerd shirts. LOL Wyatt has one with bruce lee, one with marvin the martian, one with yoda(my personaly fave) and they are the layered t's so it looks like a tshirt over a long sleeved shirt. I do like the retro t's that have like old cartoons on them and I too like the skull and crossbones but my mom hates it LOL I think for the most simple child like you can't go wrong with Carters. I love the monkeys and puppies etc that they have. and btw I blame shows like Toddlers in Tiaras for this crap. LET our KIDS be KIDS

This really bothers me too. So much of the clothing available makes toddlers look like adults!

My brother! He's a 37 yo, anesthesiologist, father of 2, who is still a skater at heart. On any given day that he dresses the kids (a 4 yo boy and a 1 yo girl) they would probably be found in either skull shirts, UW purple and gold or a Seahawks jersey. But at least my niece would probably have a cute headband to go with, LOL.

Nobody mentioned the childrens place yet. I love it. I always order online. It has sales very often on the web. And I usually order a big box. Another reason I love it that is the size. The size is a bit bigger and lingers thanc carters,... And the clothes last longer.

Besides what have been mentioned, I also amazon clothes. I got either Dr Seuss or Disney 18months - 2T girl clothes.

oshkosh.com and carters.com have some good sale prices right now. If you sign up for gymboree.com emails, they will send you a 10% off coupon--they have really cute stuff and 10% of their sale prices comes out doable for a few items. target.com has its new fall colletcion in--there are clothes from genuine kids there (made by oshkosh) that are cute and reasonably priced. oldnavy.com also has a lot more stuff than the stores and they frequently run 20% off (or more) sales.

I've had luck finding un-embellished stuff at Target, Walmart, Kohls, Old Navy, Gap (if it's on super sale or at the outlet). It definitely is hard to find stuff that's age appropriate and doesn't have a bunch of stuff written on it...

I like dressing my boys like grownups, I guess. I prefer khaki or plaid shorts and jeans, t-shirts in muted or neutral colors (gray, blue, green, orange), button down shirts over traditional baby pastels, cartoon animals, anything sports, or shirts with writing on them (#1 Baby! Daddy's Boy!). We do get a few of those things as gifts but sometimes they get returned. ;) They have had a few skull things too and I think they're cute. I prefer the rock'n roll type things though over sports themed stuff or any commercial cartoon characters. I have boys though, so I'm not as concerned about dressing in clothes that seem "sexy" or geared toward teens.

I like clothes from Baby Gap and Children's Place. They also have some cute things from Kohl's and some Carters for basics. At Babies R Us I got some Amy Coe and Koala Baby things that were pretty cute and good quality. I've also found a few things at Target, I especially like their OshKosh line, but they also have a lot of goofy animal print type things and a lot of cheaply made stuff too that doesn't hold up well. It's hit or miss there. I think nearly all of the ir Baby Gap stuff has been bought on clearance, so it doesn't have to be expensive. They mark things way down and we've got many things at like $3 for a shirt or shorts.

I have the same problem. All the clothes the kids got for their b-day are too grown up. Am I supposed not put socks on DD when she wears lace bottom legging? I don't send her out without socks or tights and she received 2 pair of these. Without gift receipts they'll just sit in the drawer.

My girls wore lace-trimmed leggings last year and I did put socks underneath. They usually wore white and I tried to look for ankle socks that were dressier so they were thin around the ankle. Does that make sense?
