when your kids draw...

...how much of the drawing do they want you to do for them? Mine are on a big drawing/painting kick right now, but as soon as I get them set up with paper and markers/paints, it's "Want Mommy to draw Andrew going down the tunnel slide" and "Want Mommy to draw Grandma getting stung by a jellyfish" and "Want Mommy to draw Ivy getting a boo boo and Daddy giving her a hug and a band-aid." It's kind of cute that they are so impressed by my (limited) artistic abilities, but it also gets old really fast! (I try to nudge them to try doing it themselves, or we hold the marker together, or I "teach" them how to make a circle or an oval, or - best of all! - I conveniently disappear to the kitchen. :D )

Do your kids do this too?

I don't draw for mine, they have never asked me to. :pardon: It's a good thing because I can't draw at all.

Mine have not started to do this yet. Usually it starts off with them handing me a crayon and then I get it taken away from me after 2 minutes. I think it's funny that when my kids draw they'll say they are drawing each other or us and it's all scribbles.

Mine most definately do this when they're drawing, and with Play doh, too. Sometimes they want me to do everything for them. I'm like "I thought YOU wanted to draw/play Play doh." Other times they're just fine on their own. Oddly, they've never asked me to paint anything for them.

Both of mine do this. I think it's because their babysitter would draw things for them, so now they want me too as well.

I'd say they draw more on their own than they ask me to.

However, they are always asking for us to draw on the Doodle Pad we have.

If you can draw Grandma getting stung by a jellyfish, I'm impressed by your abilities too!

Seriously, though... I don't get asked this nearly as often now that my kids are old enough to do at least semi-representational drawing. Their pictures may not look (to me) anything like what they say they're drawing, but it seems to satisfy them. I think the "Draw this, Mommy!" phase was biggest when they first realized that someone could draw a picture that actually looked like something, but they were still far away from being able to do it themselves.

As far as how I handled it -- I would draw one or two, then say, "That's it, I'm not going to draw anything else today." (Or, as you say, conveniently disappear to the kitchen.) It was just one more thing I had to put a limit on -- and although that particular thing is no longer an issue, plenty of other things certainly are.

If I'm in the room when they start drawing they usually want me to draw different things for them...and crazy stuff that I could never draw. I also conveniently disappear after several drawings of a pegasus or dinosaur or chickens in a henhouse. I mean, there is only so much you can do drawing stick people. :D

I agree. I had one who would want me to draw and one who wanted to do it herself. But, eventually the one who wanted me to draw for him outgrew it. Although, now he wants me to make paper airplanes for him. :search:

Mine did that around that age. They've evolved though. Now they draw constantly, I feel like we're killing a forest around here. They have not asked me to draw something in a really long time.

Mine used to do that a lot... and then criticize my drawings  "Mommy that doesn't look like a cat!"

Now they draw mostly on their own, but sometimes when they are coloring they want me to color things for them.

I've been really impressed that their drawings actually look like stuff these days. Its cool to see those fine motor skills developing.

Mine don't ask me to draw. :pardon: I really suck at drawing, I hope they inherit their dad's artistic ability! They do ask me to trace their hands, but that's it.

Mine used to do the same thing. :aggressive:

They used to ask me alot to draw for them but then I started requesting they do the drawings and sort of pushed them to do it on their own. They wanted ONLY me to draw. :umm:

    Same here.

None of mine have done that. There was an occasional cat or dog or something but it was never a "thing" that they did.
