When will she learn?

So, the babes are turning one on Saturday. I'm almost done weaning them, and in the process we've been using sippy cups. I never really did the bottle thing because I figured it would just end up being one more thing I'd have to wean them from. I've been giving them sippy cups in their highchairs with meals for months now. It never really bothered me that my dd made a huge mess when she drank from them because she was always confined and wearing a bib! Well now that the sippy cup is their only source of liquid I'm offering them to them a lot more throughout the day. My dd looooooves the sippy cup, but she is soooooo messy. She just sucks and sucks and sucks but doesn't swallow intermittently, so it ends up just running all down her front. ARGH! I've tried every kind of sippy. Nuby, straws, take-n-toss, playtex. It doesn't make a bit of difference. I thought that this was just a matter of time, and would resolve itself...but we're talking months now! When we're out and about I can't have her completely soaked in milk everytime she wants a drink! I'm getting super frustrated. For the record, my ds has no problems at all. Anyone had a similar experience? Suggestions? Thanks ladies.

Oh yeah....Porter's pretty good, but Bridger just gulps and gulps until his mouth is all full and then swallows about half and lets the other half run down his front. So far my solution is just to offer them milk at mealtimes when they're in their high chairs, and they get water the rest of the day whenever they need it (I just leave cups out for them to grab whenever they want a drink). That way at least it's only water that he's getting everywhere, and the milk stays mostly contained to his bib at mealtime.

I'm so discouraged to hear this. We just started milk in sippies and one dd doesn't swallow and makes a huge mess. I was hoping it was just a "learning" thing and would quickly resolve. Hopefully, someone else out there has a solution.

My girls were like this for a while, and they got used to it. I agree, it's a hassle for a while.

My girls were pretty sippy cup impaired for quite a while, but they evenutally got it. Just hang in there.

Ok, Phew! I was just worried I missed a major step or something! I'll just stick this one out!

That's what I would do too. Mine do well with all sippies now, although at first they only "got" the straw sippies. But we only allow milk and juice at the table, water everywhere else.

We used straw sippies after our transition from bottles, they didn't like to tip their heads back with the regular sippies. Now they use straw sippies if they are walking around and open cups at the table.

Same deal here -- Karina drinks very well from a straw, and Kevan is a disaster. We go through several bibs with him -- he just lets it run out of his mouth. Sometimes it's in protest, because if I give a little bit of juice, amazingly THAT stays in and goes down. Imagine, LOL.

I actually think he's got a bit of oral motor delay....but, a lot of babies take forever to get the hang of sippies. I couldn't take Nadia off the bottle 'til age 2. (That was mostly due to her stubborness, though.)

So, don't stress! I know it's a mess, but she'll get it eventually....
