So, thankfully, here we are in that place beyond potty training but where pottying is still a BIG DEAL. So here's my question of the week:

How long till their skinny little butts can handle the regular toilet and when can I trust them to wipe their own tushies?

I can't remember when we ditched the potty ring, but they haven't used it in many months. But mine still can't wipe themselves well. They usually try and then we finish up the job.

I think we got rid of the potty ring between 3 1/5 and 4. The girls are the ones who just stopped using it on their own so I'm not really sure when. They mainly used it when going poopy between that time. My girls are 5 and they still sometimes need help wipping. They will do it themselves and then call me if they think they need help. They also use the flushable wipes which really help with wipping their tushies on their own.

Marie, my guys hated the potty ring, so they kept taking it off, and I would keep putting it back on. I finally gave up and they use the potty without it. No messes. I am surprised they actually have pretty good aim.

I am enjoying not having to buy diapers anymore!!

Mine still don't wipe theirselves... they are terrible at it, LOL

We never really used the ring, but did have a Flip N Flush and we took it off when she started fliping it up. She has always been good about wiping, so no help there. It has been my experience with differn little and big boys..... They NEVER really learn to wipe well!! :p

Mine never used the ring and they TRY to wipe their own butts .. but I usually go in there and make sure its done right. I keep a tub of flushable wipes near the toilet for an extra good cleaning. :)

We sometimes go without the potty ring, but as for wiping for pee they've got it. But pooping still needs my help, otherwise they are not "clean" enough...

mine haven't used a ring or seat since probably last summer.
They've been going on the regular potty for at least 8 months.

I still wipe their bottoms after poo.

Well...little boys here...so they only sit down once/day. I put away toilet ring thing....maybe last summer? (age 3.5) They both felt comfortable sitting on the regular toilet very quickly. They also are fine sitting on public restroom toilets (which soooo grosses me out...but it seems they have to do #2 everytime we are out!) I would just keeping trying them on the regular seat ("sans" the ring) and see when they are comfortable without it.

From what I hear, most kids become proficient wipers by Kindergarten. Especially since they are supposed to do it themselves there. Again with boys, the wiping thing is only once/day. I have a box of flushable wipes in every bathroom in our house. They know they are allowed to use only one wipe and them call me in to help. They're pretty inconsistent. Sometimes they do a good job wiping and other times....oh boy. I find the wipes very helpful for #2. especially since they insist on standing to get wiped. I think they feel uncomforable sitting and wiping for fear that they will fall in the toilet if they remove a hand. I think once they can sit and wipe that they will do a better job.

Marie, I hate to break it to you, but "wiping" can be a long way off. My girls both potty trained early, early early, but those familar words, "mommy come wipe me", went on for years. I mean heavens, you wouldn't want those delicate little fingers to get pooey would you. My daughter teachers kindergarten and a good number of the late 4 year olds and early 5 year olds come in without the necessary hygenic skills. My daughter has to talk to several parents, asking them to work with the children on learning those skills.
