    Hi,
My twins are a little over 2 1/2. My friend told me today that at that age, her kids were off of sippies completely. I just never thought about it. They both want their milk almost the moment they wake up in the morning, so I've used the sippies all along. She was telling me it is easier to potty train if they don't have that constant availablity to fluids all day long.

    Just curious of your responses.

    TIA

Well, the people at the WIC office told me that they should go from bottles to regular cups at 1 year. That sippys were just another form of bottle.

Now, that being said - my (soon to be) 3yo still drinks from sippys because I don't want him to spill on my carpet. Not for any other reason. With dinner and such I will give him a regular cup or one with a lid and straw. But he doesn't just drink from them all day. It's not that he can't drink from a cup...I just don't want him too, kwim? And FWIW - he was completely potty trained before 2 1/2. :D

(IMO) sippy's aren't bottles, they're just spill-proof cups. I can't imagine letting my boys run around with cups without lids already! Disaster, disaster! LOL

    I don't know, maybe I'm just paranoid.

At the table, my 3 yr old uses a cup. When it's in between meals and she wants a drink, it's in a sippy. Mainly b/c of the spill factor.

I think with my oldest we started letting her use a regular cup at the table, but other than that she had a sippy.

I do not think sippies are another form of the bottle. I know I've heard people saying they are starting with their twins at 18 months, more power to them, but I see no reason right now to do that. They won't be drinking out of a sippy cup when they go to kindergarten.

Really, because my WIC office gave sippies for them to use when they were 9 months old and never told me anything about that!

My 2-1/2-year-old boys drink from cups at the table and sippie cups the rest of the time. I do agree with the potty training observation...one of my boys will drink all day if I let him...he would be in the bathroom every 5 minutes! I've been trying to cut him back a little. The other boy it's not a problem. In the past week or so they've realized they can twist the caps off their sippie cups so don't know how much longer that will last. May have to have them just have cups at the table.

My boys are 3.5yrs old. They drink out of regular cups when seated at the kitchen table or outside. They always drink out of cups with lids/straw when eating out at restaurants. I still use sippy cups if I take them a drink elsewhere in our house (although we try to enforce drinking only in the kitchen area). Otherwise a spill would very likely end up on the carpet or upholstery furniture..no thanks to a big red stain!

My friends have told me that they have used sippies in the house all the way up to kindergarten (age 5 or so). We'll see. Most of the time anymore, they say that they only want a cup. I acutally prefer that they be restricted to drinking out of a cup in the kitchen than carry a sippy (they aren't 100% spill proof and they easily undo the lids these days).

My son can drink just fine out of an open cup, but that doesn't mean I want him to have an open cup available to him all day. 1 because of the spill factor, 2 if he sets it down, the girls would want it and I don't want them having access to the open cups. The girls are still a drink and toss type of kids, so I wouldn't want the mess involved of non-sippy cups.

Gabe drinks out of the milk carton or juice container at preschool, no problems there. And uses a diego sippy cup at home. No problems transitioning at all.

My boys just turned 2. One of them drinks really well out of a cup. The other is still touch and go. If they're not in their chairs, I prefer them to use their straw sippys - because of the mess factor.

yeah, that's funny. This was only 2 months ago when I was there. They gave me these cool little training cups. They are like "regular" cups but have a bit of a lid that allows liquid through, but not quiet as fast as an open cup. We tried them for a couple days and they just made a huge mess...so back to sippy's I went. :)

I dont think sippy's are like bottles either...that's just what the WIC lady told me.

I also know that personally, I like to have a drink handy. I get thirsty more often than just meal time. So I dont' have a prob letting them have their sippy's around for when they are thirsty. They usually have diluted juice or water and then meal times they get something tastier.

My boys mastered reg cups at the table around 2. But all other times they have straw cups or those take and toss munchkin cups. Those are not totally spill proof but my boys are pretty good about drinking and putting them on the windowsill or table etc. And its only water! I cannot imagine only giving them fluids at the table or a reg cup anywhere else but outside!

Our little ones will be two next month and have mastered using cups at the table. We only drink milk and water at our house due to sugar content in other drinks, and only drink milk at the table. So, a little water spilled is not a big deal for me. But, if we have snack at the park, it is much easier to bring a straw sippy full of water. When we go out to eat we also break down and bring a sippy of milk, that makes it one less thing to worry about.

I actually have to smile at this because my son IS in kindergarten and the majority of the time he DOES still drink out of a sippy cup. The reason is he will set it down and the twins will go for it immediately and spill it all over the place. He can drink out of a regular cup and often does if the twins aren't around, but anywhere in the house, he has a sippy. I don't think it is holding him back, I think it just keeps me from cleaning up TONS of spills!!!

My boys still use sippy cups, although that doesn't help too much with the spill factor. They like to get as much of whatever is in their cups into their mouth and spit it on the floor. They of course clean it up, which is super cute, but I have to go and get a paper towel and say "Clean it up now." They can drink totally fine out of a regular cup, and honestly, I started them on regular cups before they turned 1. They just like to purposely spill EVERYTHING just to make mommy mad. So, that's why I stick to the sippy cups. Granted, I do put a little bit of water in regular cups every once in a while. :p
