when to put the bumper pads back on?

Both my boys are movers and shakers in their cribs. I took off the bumper pads when they started sleeping in their cribs at 1 month. Well now one of my boys wakes himself up because his head will be up against the railing...do you think it would be okay to put the bumpers back on?

We've had bumpers on since birth, and I can't imagine not having them now. Like yours our boys wiggle and squirm until their heads are usually up in the corner. But they have pretty good upper body strength and seem to instinctively know when to turn their head so they can get more air, so I don't worry about it too much. Plus we use video monitors and they usually grunt some when they get up against the crib bumper, and when I see this I go in there and gingerly pull the baby back towards the center of the mattress (and pray he doesn't wake up!). Of course, an hour later they end up right back in the corner, LOL.

We bought some inexpensive breatheable bumpers.. they do the trick!

I am a bad mommy and have left the bumper pads on the whole time my children have used their cribs.

The only reason we took them off was because when the boys were about a month old, we had them swaddled and one of them rolled into the corner with his head facing into the pad. We just happened to look in there and saw him like that, needless to say it freaked us out! :shok:

We've never taken them off (other than for half a day and DD got her arm stuck in the slats and the bumpers went right back on). They don't seem dangerous to me.

We had them on the whole time too without issue.

I kept them on the entire time all of my kids were in cribs.

i was always told not to use bumper guards or sleep positioners because of the SIDS risk, HOWEVER we use both and have since birth.

my boys are also movers and shakers, we put them in the crib in one position and when we wake up they have completely wiggled themselves right to the bottom of the crib with their backs up against the bumper. if the bumper guards are too low the boys stick their limbs through the crib railing and i wake up to legs and arms hanging out of the crib so for me bumpers are a def. must.

i would say that if your boys are that active they probably wouldn't let themselves suffocate. at least in my opinion. mine are able to move their heads from side to side and push up and if they've gotten themselves into a position that they can't breathe they move out of it rather quickly.

personally i prefer having the guards up regardless of the SIDS risk involved, getting limbs and/or heads stuck in crib railing is far to common and potentially deadly. within the last 2 weeks DH went on a fire/emt call while he was on shift where the baby got his head stuck in the crib railing (no bumpers) and died. so it's a risk either way.

in the end it's your call. as for breathable bumpers, i've heard these don't really make a difference.

I put my bumper pads back on when the kids started to get arms and legs stuck...I am not sure how old they were, probably around 7-8 months old.

We have never taken ours off...been on the cribs since they started sleeping in them at 5 months. I think it's safe to put yours back on now.

I've used them with all my kids from birth. I also used sleep positioners when they were small to prevent them from rolling just like yours did :)

We've had ours on since birth too and they are the more decorative type (not the breathable ones you can buy at the stores but the ones that come in the bedding set). We debated taking them off but the boys are movers and shakers too and the time we did take them off they were getting limbs stuck everywhere so back on they went!
