When to progress from stage 2 foods?

Just curious because some people say that I should be giving them those Gerber puffy snacks already. Is this true? They have been on stage 2 foods since 6m, they are now 8m. Since we don't go back to the pedi until next month I don't know when I should be moving onto stage 3 or even the puffs. What's the "standard"? Any advice would be great!

When they start working on their pincer grasp then you can give them Cheerios, puffs or other small soft food like diced veggies, fruits or cheese. If the food is slimey you can coat it in breadcrumbs, wheat germ or Cheerio crumbs. HTH!

I agree with Jenny, if they can pick things up between their fingers you could probably try puffs. Puffs melt better in their mouth than cheerios (we tried them ourselves). We first started with 1/2 puffs around 8.5 months. We didn't give them whole puffs until around 10 months until we knew they would do ok with them. If you think they are ready try it and see.

Hi, Leslie...I can't believe your girls are already 8 months! My advice: don't freak out if they gag (or gag/puke) the first couple of tries. It's scary, but they do eventually learn to chew them.

We started puffs at about 8 mos. took about 4 or 5 tries before I was willing to do dishes or eat myself instead of hovering over them anticipating the gag/finger sweep/back thrust.

We're still pretty slow adapting to table foods, but it's been wonderful to go to a restaurant and have something to throw down and keep them busy while we play "beat the clock" with our meal. Certainly not the relaxing experience dining out used to be, but it's a nice distraction for the entire family.

    Good Luck.

We introduced Puffs only in the last month - both are doing really good - and we've started adding other types of finger foods, plus started dicing and mashing some of their fruits and veggies as well (even those we still spoon feed)...

Our pedi told me to start giving them puffs now...to help learn hand to mouth coordination- or something like that[IMG] My girls do fine with them. Its kinda funny watching them chew especially because they don't even have teeth! Its a nice little snack to give them a few if I am warming up bottles or something to keep them distracted!

I just started my girls on the puffs and cheerios. I learned with my 3 year old that sometime if you soak them in formula, they texture doesn't seem as strange...
