When should you head to the hospital? How many contractions per hour?

My wife asked that I post this for her........she is currently 35 weeks/ 5 days pregnant and thus far, no complications.

She just started experiencing contractions this evening, at the rate of roughly 3 p/hr. so roughly 20 minutes apart. Is it possible they could subside and hold off for another couple days/weeks? Be false contractions or something? She said they definitely arn't Braxton Hicks.....

At what point should we make our way to the hospital? Any rule of thumb on this? 5 minutes apart? less/more?

    Thank in advance!

It wouldn't hurt for her to call her on call dr (or the hospital who will call the dr for her), just to clarify when she should go in.

I went in with a singleton when my contractions were 7 mins apart, but I lived 40 mins away from the hospital. By the time I arrived and was hooked up to the monitors my contractions were subsiding, and I was sent home.

I would also call. They might just have her go in for a quick peek. Good luck and keep us posted!

At the hospital tour we were told about 411 code 4 contraction per hour duration 1 minutes then we need to go to the hospital.
but I would also call OB to check.

When i was pregnant, if I would start contracting, I would drink water and lay down on my left side. If that didnt do it and I had 4-6 in an hour we went to the hospital.
I had my labor stopped 2x.

Thanks so much for all the responses........For whatever reason, they stopped around 8:30pm and she hasn't had one since....

But, now we know what to expect and how many it takes 'roughly' to warrant a phone call and trip to the hospital.

Thanks to all for the responses and various tips. I'll surely pass the word.

i say from personal first time twin mommy experience that if in doubt call the doc, especially since she is so far along. if i have 3 contractions in an hour i'm calling the doctor, regardless. twin pregnancies need to be monitored very closely so they don't mind that i've been to triage damn near weekly since week 24.

don't be scared to call, if something feels off (and she'll know) or different, call the doc and go get checked out. it's better to be safe than sorry in my opinion.

    hope all goes well!!!

Here's a couple of things that my OB told me to do before calling to see if the contractions subsidded before calling her.

First, have her lay on her left side.
Immediately start drinking water...dehydration can bring on contractions.
If contractions are not stopping and are consistent, then call. Like pp's said, 4-6 within a hour definitely warrant a call to your OB.
