When should I put my hospital bag together?

Just wondering if anyone has any advice as to when the hospital bag should start getting packed? I get so worried seeing all these twins being delivered so much earlier than 38 weeks (when I'm scheduled for my c-section) that I want to be prepared...

I've had one packed for over a month, now. We live an hour from my doc/hospital, so better safe than sorry. You just never know when you're going to go in and not come back for a while! I also have a goodie bag packed for my 3 yo son w/ snacks, new toys, etc., just in case he needs to be amused for longer than I expect. I throw both of these bags in the car before every appt. I'd much rather be overly-prepared than try to navigate DH to all of the "right" things to gather for me while I'm laid up in a hospital bed. One less thing for both of us to worry about. I also have a list of things that aren't packed yet because I use them every day (i.e. camera, cell phone charger, etc.) so that they can be grabbed up at the last minute, too.

Yeah, I'm an overplanner, huh.

I kept saying I would pack mine but didn't until the week before my scheduled c-section!! :shok:
I did end up in L&D about 2 weeks before I delivered though & thought 'OH NO!! I don't have my bag packed!!' I was going to have to have my hubby try to navigate through my stuff which would not have turned out pretty
SOO, I say do it sooner than later just for peace of mind :good:

i hadn't even thought about packing my bag & then i ended up in hospital at 27 weeks with possible PTL. after that scare, i went home & packed my bag. ;) i say it's never too early to have the bare essentials packed & ready to go. it's also one less thing to worry about once it's done.

although, my DH says that if i pack even 50% of what i packed this time, next time, there won't BE a next time. :D he hated lugging all that crap around the hospital & frankly, i barely used any of it.

I packed mine at 27/28 weeks. The reason I did this was that I travel for work and stopped flying at the end of January. When I completed my last work trip, I took my toiletry bag and started throwing things into the bag for the hospital. Then after my shower, I washed the clothes & blankets to bring them home and threw them in the bag last weekend.

I didn't have a bag packed and ended up in the hospital for a week at 24 weeks. I don't know how far along you are, but just pack the bag. It can't hurt. I was on bedrest after that and assumed I could grab my stuff and go when necessary, but I got sent to the hospital the second time at 33 weeks from a dr. appt - so still without a bag :). It wasn't that big of a deal. DH grabbed the necessities each time and fumbled through the closet for the clothes I requested. Really I didn't need that much so it didn't really matter in the end.

I had planned a home birth with my DS, and unexpectedly went into labor too early...I had ALL the gear needed for a home birth all ready to go, but suddenly, as I lay in bed contracting, with broken water, I looked up at my husband in a complete panic and said "A BAG! I don't have a hospital bag!" He looked at me with just as much panic and said "What do you put in it???" I made him rummage through my pregnancy books until he found "hospital bag" in the index and I read off the list to him while he did his best to get it all packed up for me. Needless to say, he packed all the wrong clothes, not enough undies and I was pretty miserable.

You obviously aren't planning for a home birth, but my point is that is is NOT FUN to be packing one at the last minute under pressure...your stay at the hospital will be that much more uncomfortable. All that to say, just pack the bag asap and be ready...it doesn't hurt, right?

I never packed a bag. I was put in the hospital twice (once for observation and once where they ended up delivering me). I was sent both times straight from the Dr office, so even if I would have had one packed, it wouldn't have been with me. I just made a list and had my husband bring what I needed. I figured most of the things i would want to pack was things I use everyday anyway.
