I have seen it many times in threads about solids...saying at first it is just practice...ok, so when does it stop becoming practice and actually start becoming meals?

hmmm, for us it was closer to 9-12 months. One of my boys had a texture issue, so ate soft foods longer.

1 year. Before that it is practice and tasting new flavors/textures. Before a year they get all their nutrients from formula/BM. I do think around 9 or 10 months they do decrease their formula/bm intake and increase solid intake, so it starts around then, but not really until 1 year.

Agree with the pps. Closer to one year when you start dropping bottles and the amount of formula or BM decrease then the solids start make up for the nutrients lost.

I think by a year it solids should make up most of what your babies eat but I think there is a transitional period from 9-12 months b/c you can't go from practice to full nutrition all at once. We are slowly increasing their solids and decreasing their formula, but we still make sure they get at least 20 ounces a day (which is hard b/c they would much rather be eating real food).

Ditto this - there is a long transition as their insides mature. They gradually take in more and more nutrients from solids (you'll notice that what comes out looks less and less like what goes in :). Most people look at a year as the time frame, but whole milk/formula/breastmilk will still provide a lot of important nutrition after that cut-off.

It really depends! Some babies will be big eaters early, others can sort of take it or leave it even at 11 or 12 mo... The best thing you can do is just follow your babies' lead. You'll know when they're really hungry for food!
