My twins were supposedly 5 weeks early. I'm beginning to believe I was further along than we thought! We did a weight/length check at the health center at 4 months exactly. Jack was 16 lbs 8 oz and 24 3/8inches Sam was 12 lbs 13 oz and 23 2/8inches Everyone really seems shocked at Jack's weight. He doesn't have fat rolls, but he's pudgy with no edema. He's been wearing clothing for 6-9 month olds since 3 months old. He does have a really long torso, arms, and legs. His hands, like Sams and Daddys, are hamhocks anyhow. Not fat hands, but big. The doctors did say they both had really long femurs at birth. That didn't change between the ultrasound and birth! Jack has been taking 8oz bottles for at least a month. He'll eat 6-8oz every 4hrs and is usually satisfied until next feeding. I don't allow him snacks like I do Sam. Sam just refused to eat for a long time so we did snack bottles. We are trying to eliminate that 1am feeding and doing very well with 4oz. Only time I get Jack to take less than 6-8oz. What is the Pedi going to think when I lug this chunk in the 18th? Mommy is shoving the bottle down his throat?
Nope, if he is maintaining his growth curve percentile and doesn't keep going up percentages, he is fine. My "larger" twin is 14.5 lbs, the smaller twin is 12 lbs. Sounds like your son is just going to be a big kid. Doctors will take parents stature into account when they examine babies.
My oldest DS was always "above 99%ile" on weight and length until around 18 months or so. And then, I was disappointed!! I thought I was doing something wrong, but the Pedi always told me he just couldn't possibly grow at that rate forever - he warned me that he would slow down, and he did. My LOs were only 1 week early (scheduled C-section), so it might not be a good comparison, but they were 18# 15 oz and 15# 8 oz at 4 months. I didn't get any funny stares - just more smiles for being so blessed with healthy babies and good eaters. My DS is like your Jack - I don't remember him ever taking less than 8 oz in a bottle, from the his first bottle, which was probably at 3 weeks or so. Now, both my LOs take 10 oz in a bottle and sometimes that isn't enough. I love having big babies - I feel like I have less to worry about!! I'm sure you are doing everything right!!
AT four months my DS was 17 lbs and 5 oz amd DD was 15lbs 2oz. They were preemies so they gained weight very quick. However they have slowed down their weight gain. They are now 10 months old and DD weights 19lbs and 8oz and DS weighs 20lbs 10oz. Once they start crawling and rollong he will lose weight. Enjoy your little chubby baby! They are so cute chubby.
Omgosh thanks for the replys! Jack recently has been demanding more than 8oz so I really hesitated to give him more. I'm afraid he'd eat Sam if I don't watch him! LOL He's my little pumpkin that's for sure. I forgot to post he weighed 5.6lbs and Sam was 4.2 at birth. Don't know if that still makes a difference...
Mine were born at 32 weeks at 4# 6 ounces and 4# 9 ounces and by their 6 month checkup were well over 20#. They were on the high end of the formula intake charts throughout their entire first year and even had terrible reflux. I never force fed them. I just fed them when they were hungry. My Ped never said anything to me about their weight.
Mine were 4 weeks early, and at 4 months 2 weeks were 17.5 pounds and 14.5 pounds. DS is the bigger one, and his arms and legs are long and his hands and feet are huge. I was worried at around month 2 when he started taking much more from the bottle than DD did, but the doctors were never worried. And this last checkup, the doctor said he would probably be over 6 feet like his father, grandfather and uncles (it was hard for me to maintain a straight face though, how could he possible know this by looking at a 4.5 monther?). Anyway - don't worry! As long as they are weight/height proportionate (or approximately so) and the doctors aren't worried, I'd stop giving it a second thought. Good job growing your babies!
My DS was born at 5.5 pounds. By 3 months he was in the 90% for weight. Our pedi would always ask "how much are you feeding him???" Anyway, I just fed him on demand. They are growing huge amounts the first year. I figure they know if they are hungry. It all starts balancing out when they learn to crawl and then walk. They burn off a lot of calories and they start to balance out more. At 15 mos, my DS is now about 60% for weight.
I think my babies are going to be on the large side as well. At least one of them. By the two months check-up the little one practically doubled his weight and my chuncky one was close to 13 lbs. They eat a lot a think for 2 months old boys, but as long as they want to eat that much, I'm happy (12lbs 13oz baby eats 6oz every 4 hours, 10lbs 9oz baby eats 5.5oz every 4 hours). You can't overfeed a baby. If that was the case they would be throwing it back up.
My oldest dd was born big, at 9.12 lbs and 21 in long. She stayed in the 90+ %'s for the first couple years. Now that she is 3 her weight has dropped down to 80% or so, but her height is still upper 90%. At birth, she skipped newborn diapers, the nurse had to go to the PICU to get size 1 diapers for her, and she skipped newborn clothes, the day after we got home from the hospital we had to go shopping for 0-3 and 3-6 month clothes because none of the newborn stuff fit. If it had feet, forget it. If it was footless it would go on, but it didn't cover her lower legs! Right now, my dd twin is following in her big sis's footsteps. She was born at 7.2 lbs and 20 in long, and has consistently been around 70+ % for height and weight. At their 9 month check she was 21 lbs even, and her bro was 18.4 lbs. She is wearing 18-24 month clothes and Liam's 12 month pants still slide off his butt! I just have big girls, and my ped has no problems with it as long as they follow their curve! Rylee's 6month weight took a dramatic upward turn (into the 90+ %), and we didn't put her on a diet, but we did water her formula down a bit more and added more solids in. Her weight has dropped back to her curve line at 9 months, she's finally started crawling!
I don't remember my twins weight's at 4 months, it's been a long time! But I specifically remember that Jake was 21 lbs at 6 months! Don't worry! I was worried I was somehow creating an overweight baby, or bad feeding habits ... and my pedi thought I was nuts! She said he's just a big boy and will slow down soon. He did ... He is now 2.5, 34 lbs and 39 inches (VERY tall!) ... And he was born a 5.5 lbs ... Trust me ... they will slow down. Oh, and the bolded part made me LOL!
I have boy/girl twins. At birth the boy was 6lbs7oz, the girl 5lbs 1oz. At 4 months the Boy: 17lb 11oz and drank 5-6oz, Girl: 12lbs 8 oz and drank 4oz. My boy is HUGE!! and in the 90th percentile for everything while my girl is below 20th percentile. They are so different. Now I am sure he is over 20 lbs but he only drinks about 6-7oz per feeding. They both had reflux, she was worse and is still on meds (I hope to stop soon). He just got off of them. (YEAH!) I was a little bit worried on the size of my boy but now reading that many boys were over 20 lbs at 6 months makes it easier, not easier to hold him, geesh! My older boy (3 next month) is big also, he is about 45 lbs and over 3 feet tall. Many people think he is 4. But when comparing him to my twin boy, my twin boy is bigger, OMG! ardon: So sometimes they don't slow down.
My boys were five weeks early, 6 lbs and ONLY 18 inches at birth! (That's short and heavy for the gest age! LOL) My boys took 8 oz per bottle after 3 months AND were 26 and 1/2 lbs at 6 months. They were HUGE! My friends called them "little bricks"cuz they were/are just SOLID kids. (like me.. a-hem..) Anyway, eating is good! At 11 months we took the the formula away and weight WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYy dropped off. As soon as they were walking, forget about it! They are now 27 months and JUST hit 30 lbs! They're still short tho at 34 inches. STILL little bricks! But notice the stall in weight. I was super worried at first and now I just "get" that it happened FAST and had nowhere to go but plateau for a while to normalize. I'm sure that will happen with you too. CUTE!
I always had really big babies, they always wore double their age in clothing sizes until they were over a year old. As long as he is following his own curve for growth, he will be fine. Just a big, healthy boy!
My chunky monkeys were 5 lbs and 6 lbs at birth and were 21 lbs at 6 months. But they've only gained 1.5 and 2 lbs over the last almost 4 months. A lot of babies chunk up right until crawling and then stay around the same for the second half of the year. I wouldn't worry too much. For a while my babies growth curve was a straight vertical line! Not all babies follow a steady growth curve. Some chunk up early and then slow down.
Im not sure what to say, my girls have never really taken 8oz of milk at almost 6mos I can barely get them to down 6oz. But dont feel bad, as long as theyre both healthy, happy, feed them is what I say. Some babies just like to eat, my 14yro was that way as a kid. However, my fluffy girl is almost 21 lbs, my skinny but has more rolls girl is about 18 almost 19lbs. But they do eat every 2-4hrs, wake up in the middle of the night still, and I have been feeding them 3times a day (recommended by pedi) for over a month. Granted they were over 15lbs when I started feeding them,so hasnt made a huge diff in their weight. No, Im not cool with the waking up in the middle of the night, but have no idea what to do (tried everything).
Thanks again to everyone. I feel much relieved now! Jack is just one of those kids that demands a bottle. I've never once worried about his appetite except that it might be too good! LOL
Your babies weigh EXACTLY the same as mine did at four months. My Jack is also the big one. I am not worried, doc is not worried. My three year old was the same size wise when she was a baby. Always in the 90-95th percentiles for height and weight. And my smaller twin, who is 12.5 pounds, the doc is also not worried. She is only in the 25th percentile. But, doc says she is gaining weight, so everything is fine. She eats less frequently and smaller amounts, but all is well! I just have two really big kids and one wee petite one!
