When does RSV season end?

    Hi there,
Our twins are healthy and doing well. They are 6 months now. My DS is 20 pounds and my DD is 14 pounds. They were born at 36 weeks and our pediatrician wanted us to take strict RSV precautions (no malls, no large public gatherings, no group events).

I've recently started taking them out for small trips. Drug store, small restaurant, etc. I REALLY want to start going to the gym. This means I would leave them at the gym daycare. I assume they will be exposed to more bugs and germs.

How long did you wait to take your babies out in public? If you took them to the gym daycare, do they always get sick now? When is RSV season finished? Our pedi originally said possibly March. We have another appointment coming up soon, so I will ask her again.

I met another Mom of twin girls born in November. They were born at 36 weeks, and were 5 pounds. Her pediatrician never asked her to take RSV precautions. I guess it depends on your pediatrician?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!! Beth

From what my Ped told us March is the last month for RSV season. And I think it depends on your Ped about what they want you to do as far as not taking them to public places. I can tell you that mine were born at 32 weeks in December during RSV season and qualified for Synagis vaccinations and we didnt take them out in public until at least March. We just alternated who stayed home with the kids. But I definitely had them out before they were 6 months old to the mall and Target and such.

It depends on where you live. For us in Florida, it's not over until April.

Mine were born at 33w at the end of November. It is just driving me crazy not going to church as a family. We go to different services. We qualified for the RSV shots and our insurance paid for shots thru April so we're using that as a guideline........although I think we all go to church together on Easter.

I know how frustrating it is not to take them out.

Our ped did not say anything about it - although he did ask if they were going to be in daycare. I said no, and that was the end of that. We have taken them to the gym daycare several times now. They did end up with a runny nose a few weeks after we started taking them - but fortunately it did not turn into anything more than that. We have alwasy taken them to places with us, and all they have had so far is the runny nose I mentioned *knock on wood*

Our RSV season is November-April here in AZ and that's how long we vaccinate for. I would just play it safe until then and do a whole lot of handwashing and avoid crowded area etc. The fresh air is always good though so we take our boys out to parks, the zoo, botanical gardens etc. I would try to avoid the gym daycare though just to play it safe. We just went through a bout of bronchiolitis and it wasn't fun. It is almost April. My boys were born at 33 weeks and 4 days and were 5.8 and 5.9. They have been growing really well ( they are 18 lbs at 6 months) and everyone tells us we're crazt to worry about delays, RSV, etc. but they did end up getting sick and it hit them pretty hard and fast. It took them almost a month to get completely over it.

Im in Ca and my son who was a micro-preemie born at 27wks gets his RSV synagis shot from Sept of each year to April and he gets it every month. Its because he is a preemie and the ped thinks this will help prevent it from occuring. When he was younger (he is 14 mon now) I would only take him to small restuarants usually keeping him covered and to families houses, on occasion to the grocery store but covered his carseat. Once he was able to sit in a high chair and in the shopping cart I started taking him more places.

The gym daycare I would be alittle hesitant to do only because at a little over a yr he started going to daycare and it seems like every week he has some other kind of cold, runny nose, ear infection etc. and this is a clean in home daycare with only about 8 kids. My ped said now is a good time to build his immune system so the ped doesnt seem to think its wrong for him to have cold since its winter and more germs than hes use to. I kept him sheltered for the 1st 8-9 months of his life and now i see y lol ;o) jk but I would use your own discresion* I clorox wipe or use wet-ones everywhere I go no matter what unless I know its a clean family's home.

    Hope this helps ;o)

Thank you for all of the input. I guess I'm just getting antsy to get out and have some normal activities. Fortunately, our weather is pretty good in CA so we can walk several times a week. My twins didn't qualify for the RSV shots. But they are doing well and I think I can wait a few more months for the gym. It's kind of hard because my GF's who have full term babies think I should go out and ignore the pediatrician.
I'll hang in for a little bit longer! I want them to be as healthy as possible. Thanks again, Beth

I had mine at 36w and they didn't qualify for Synagis and the ped gave no restrictions on RSV season - we had them in May but they were only 4 months old when RSV season started again and nothing was ever mentioned about keeping them home - and they only had one cold that year and that was mommy's fault!

RSV season doesn't end till April here. They'll get thier last Synagis shot then.

We took our babies out starting at 5 wks old (born at 34 wks). We kept people at a distance and no one touched them. I was going nuts and had to get out of the house! They did fine! I think they're exposed more from my two school-aged SD's than strangers walking by.
